While I applaud this compendium and all the effort it entailed (and continues to entail), in some sense it’s silly.
The RW scaremongers need to invent something new every day to tell their followers to be scared of. It’s the only way they can keep control of the flow of money and votes their benighted disciples represent.
So this is a bit like keeping a running list of the traffic accidents in a major metro area. We know X number will happen every day, and we know they’ll be distributed more or less randomly. With precious few exceptions we can’t really use last week’s data to predict next week’s events. There’s no explanatory power in the data.
Rhetorically speaking:
What will the RWs explode over next? Whatever happens to happen that can be distorted into something they can mock. Which is darn near anything / everything. Whether man bites dog or dog bites man it’s all something the Ds did that Rs should be afraid of / outraged about.
I share this list often and I have received numerous comments from people who had ZERO idea how much of the things people are yelling about are being driven by the same group.
“Omg, I remember that. Wasn’t that just dumb?”
People just don’t have the memory for these fuaxtroversies, given one just crowds out the other. And many, many, many just do not understand that this shit is being force-fed them by the same 20 or so bad actors.
I was viewing it through the lens of an SDMB-specific project. I’d forgotten that you’ve got a larger audience.
And yes, calling constant (and constantly updated) attention to the sum total of the propaganda war directed against our country is vital work, not silly. I’m sure it often has a David versus well-funded Goliath feel to it.
I would say a conservative estimate would have 5,000 people coming here from Twitter, FB, etc to see this list since I started the thread. One tweet alone had close to 3,000 individual link clicks (SDMB visitors). Another had over 800. And so on. 5k might be conservative, tbh, but I don’t know.
And I have copies on my Google and One drive platforms, so I can share via text, etc.
And non-Dopers remind me of things to put on the list - hell, Cathy was the one who reminded me about Spotted Owls, which was huge and I… even after 250 entries… had completely forgotten about the fucking owls which dominated the news for about a year.
I was so bothered by this I posted about not adding the owls twice, lol.
And I still think it’s a great idea for a special interest podcast. Shame I got no interest in getting someone to join me as a co-host (except from Sam Stone, who did discuss this with me, but then declined. But at least he thought about it!) Regardless, the offer is still open: I do all the production work, all the cohost has to do is prepare via some studying and come and talk for 15-30 minutes.
One of my favorite channels is @neiltyson’s startalk radio. Its format is that Tyson explains things to his co-host, usually “Lord” Chuck Nice, who stands in for the audience who is being informed. (Even if Tyson occasionally gets some things wrong that are a bit further out of his lane than he thinks they are.)
Two people who know all about a subject talking back and forth to each other can seem out of touch with “the masses”.
Honestly, the best setup, IMHO, would be for you explaining these things to an open minded conservative, who asks follow-up questions and seeks understanding. But, as such a thing may well be extinct, you may need a “crisis actor” as a stand-in.
That’s a great pithy observation, and one that I share. The same group of people I have to suffer pretty much every day has been bumping along from one freakout to the next for the past two decades plus, and, most importantly, they took/take/will continue to take it all at face value in the here and now. They never question as to who the “they” is that spoon feed them this crap, and what the motivation for it all might be.
Go with it. I’m on The War Zone site and comments are killing Biden for not shooting it down (who would also be screaming, “why shoot it down?” when debris damages/ injures/ kills someone on the ground). “He’s a wimp on national security.” “Trump would have shot it down [himself]”. (the last word there was mine)
Just to give an example: using Twitter I talked about this list with energy-industry reporter David Roberts, formerly of Vox.com. He shared it and we have had over 500 new visitors (Hi! We have cake!) to see the list just since yesterday. Earned my fifth Good Share, lol.
Clicking your avatar in this / any thread raises the pop-up that shows among other things your Good Share badge. If you want to link to your badges you need to navigate to your user page, then the badge sub-page. Interestingly, Discourse doesn’t prepare a preview of these pages.
If this was military unform “fruit salad”, I’d have a decent haul of the minor stuff with a couple of oak leave clusters, and you’d look like some 1890s European Royalty with two chests’ full, fourragère and aiguillettes dangling from both arms, two sashes, and an awesome tassle’d hat. And a really bitchin’ cool sword with which to slay trolls and idiots.
I love this place, I don’t want it to die, and the business instincts of those who run it (not the mods) match that of your street corner peddler with a shopping cart of stuff picked from the trash… barely.
I’m still mad how we flubbed NDT’s sign-up and don’t even get me going about the lost opportunity last October-November as Twitter flight hit its peak. In some ways, lol, it’s professionally offensive to me how this place is run, which even isn’t as a business which only needs to break even (don’t worry about profits and growth, just pull in enough revenue to cover expenses (which may be happening, but if it is, it’s not being done by ads or subscriptions)).
Regardless: SOMEBODY has to market the SDMB.
And that was what the podcast was going to do: market the SDMB. Yes, we would have talked about the FotR listed in this thread, but there would have been a SDMB-specific segment in there as well.
Oooh! It’s not often you can get a heads-up on a freakout-of-the-right, but the Twitter algo just banned a prominent Republican for displaying a profile picture of him hunting w/ his wife.
Go ahead and turn off CNN, boys and girls. The days news cycle has been determined: SOTUS and Twitter.
