Fred Phelps actually debated?

The above link is to an article from Wednesday’s Topeka Capital-Journal. Seems the student associations at Washburn University of Topeka arranged this debate.

Damn! I didn’t hear about it until it was too late, or I would have attended. The man ol’ Fred went up against is a fantastic speaker, (quite theatrical himself, as the article said) and has been the attorney most visible, here in Topeka, in advocating equal rights for all.

Pedro has a reason to care about human rights. No, he’s not gay, but he was born in Cuba, where human rights are, shall we say, abridged. He came to this country as a small boy and loves it with a passion.

What do you think about the comment by Phelps that the USA will not be here in thirty years, because God is going to destroy it? Makes me wonder if he is planning on doing something to help God hurry things along. The man gets scarier all the time.

I think, as I’ve said previously, Phelps should be paid no attention at all. He’s a madman. The scandal is not what he said, but that the university invited him at all.

To paraphrase P.J. O’Rourke,

You can always discuss things with Fred Phelps. Then again, you can always discuss things with a barnyard animal, for all the good it will do you.

Phelps is such a marginalized personality, even by far right standards, that he really isn’t worth worrying about. In fact, he’s so crazy that he probably helps the gay rights movement by making the other side look like raving loons.

Incidentally, anybody who is that obsessive about homosexuality has got to be (to steal a phrase from elucidator) as gay as a blue horse deep inside.
