Free Anti-Virus for Win 98 SE

My sister-in-law was given an old PC (from her daughter/son-in-law) that she hopes to hookup to the internet. I do not know at this time if the machine has any antivirus installed and if it does, it is undoubtedly way out of date.

Is there any free antivirus for Windows 98 SE, the website for AVG seems to indicate that it does not run on Win 98.

The son of the lady who’s opened her home to us has a PC running Win 98 as well – looking forward to someone’s advice here on whats available to help protect him.

The Free Personal Edition of Avira says it should run on 98.

AVG probably doesn’t work on 98 as it really sucks up the memory resources. I had it running on my laptop and, while I liked it, it was really bogging my computer down. Since most 98 machines probably won’t have much RAM, they probably decided to just exclude it.

I switched to Avira per someone’s advice on this board and I must say I’m happy with performance so far.

There is an open source anti-virus scanner called ClamAV. There is a window port for 98 here:

The catch is that it doesnt scan files automatically, so you need to do a daily scan manually via the scheduler. You also want to get into the habit of manually scanning (using right-click) programs you are about to install (or documents to open) that you are suspicious about.

You should have a firewall in addition to anti virus. A little googling turned up this
