Free PC game and free weekend notification thread

Free Epic game this week is Among Us. Get on the hottest trend of, uh, 2020 and start saying “Sus” to your exasperated children.

Company of Heroes 2: Ardennes Assault is free until the 31st. It includes the base Company of Heroes 2 game.

It’s normally like five bucks, I think. Not the greatest deal of all time.

Little Nightmares is free on Steam until the 30th. Was free before if you jumped through some hoops once upon a time but now just click 'n go.

Samorost 1 is free on Steam

Tell Me Why: Chapters 1-3 (That’s the whole game) is currently free from Microsoft Game Store for Xbox and PC. You’ll need the Xbox PC game client to install/play.

Edit: (Supposedly it’s going to be free on Steam as well for Pride Month)

Tell Me Why (full game) is now free on Steam as expected

What’s the good word, bargain shoppers?

Warhammer Underworlds: Online is free on Steam through June
Frostpunk is the Epic free game o’ the week

If you have Amazon Prime, you have access to Prime Gaming which currently includes a free Battlefield 4 key for EA Origin as well as a bunch of games you download and play direct from Amazon. They also regularly have packs of xp boosters, cosmetics and other stuff for various games so it’s worth taking a look every now and then if you’re paying for Prime anyway.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to own a lot of the base games to claim the extras. You can claim the AC: Valhalla pack to your Uplay account now, for instance, for the eventual day that you get the game. Likewise for stuff like GTA Online, Sea of Thieves or R6 Siege.

The terminology here can be confusing, so I want to make it clear that the game is free to keep as long as you get it in the month of June.

I had initially read the announcement on Steam itself as saying the game would only be free to play in June.

I would presume the Microsoft Game Store version is also free to keep.

Yeah. I sometimes make special mention of that but just as often don’t think about it because I don’t bother posting anything that’s going to be taken away from you later. If I post a game, it’s always free to keep provided you claim it on time. But I admit it can be confusing for people not used to hoovering up free games.

frostpunk is epics free game of the week …whats with the “mystery game” thing …?

Typically those are expensive and/or in high-demand games. They don’t want to tip their hand. The first time I recall seeing this was for GTA V.

GTA V was the biggest for sure. They do this during their sales now. I’ve not heard of Frostpunk. Is it a big deal that it went free? I claimed it of course.

Not really. Even at full retail, it’s a $30 game from three years ago, been on sale for $8 and been in a couple bundles. It’s a GOOD game and a lot of people into the settlement builder genre really like it but it’s not amazing that they’d give it away for free.

The idea that the mystery thing is because of astounding game quality/value sort of went out the window with Among Us. I think they just want people coming back each week during the sale period versus knowing the next game isn’t interesting and forgetting about it.

I see someone already mentioned Frostpunk is free on Epic. It’s a great game; one of the best I played last year. But then, I’m really into both base-building games and games that are difficult.

Warhammer Underworlds Online is free on Steam for Skulls week. Board game adapted to PC; I’m told it’s okay, but I haven’t played it yet, so take that with a grain of salt.

And, in related news, all Warhammer-related games and DLC are reduced in price for the week as well (6/3 - 6/10). Standout titles (for me) are Vermintide 2 and all things Total War: Warhammer (both games + all dlc are worth full price as far as I’m concerned… YMMV).

I think it is just a decision on their part to drum up visits to their site.

If they tell you “Shitty Game #23” is up next week you won’t bother visiting. But if they tell you it is a mystery you have to visit to find out. A few of those visits will generate a sale for them.

I liked Frostpunk at first but playing it I found it quickly became a rote memorization routine. Do X, then Y, then Z, then A, B and C.

Anything else and you are screwed.

That’s not fun.

Same reason I dislike so many console games that only reward you by trying over and over and memorizing the one thing that works.

I don’t disagree the gameplay suffers from that problem although in my mind’s canon it seemed somewhat realistic. A colony attempting to survive the end of the world when almost all others failed is not going to last long if it makes sub-optimal choices.

The base building component was my favorite part of the game; if that’s not your thing I can understand how it would quickly become not fun. The automatons were pretty cool too.

Press Any Button is a free game turning into a paid game on the 14th so, if you add it now, you get to keep it.
