Epic: In Sound Mind

In Sound Mind is an imaginative first-person psychological horror with frenetic puzzles, unique boss fights, and original music by The Living Tombstone. Journey within the inner workings of the one place you can’t seem to escape—your own mind.

Well, I tried Cities Skyline, and without an obvious tutorial I found this initial road building video thing off youtube, I’m just over 9 minutes in having reloaded 15 times, two hours later, and I’m still not quite getting it work fitting roads together and I’m now thinking this isn’t for me.

It’s one way roads, red lines, things never connecting the way they should, and I’m just building a few roads off the starting point. God knows how annoying this will get once it’s got a few buildings and industries and there are actual problems to solve.

I loved Railroad Tycoon back in the day and Railway empire seemed to be filling the gap for that, and it fell down a hole of that one too, with hours spent trying to draw a train line between A and B and connecting the wrong way around to the line over and over again. Maybe there was a time these things were fun, but it seems you need a Phd in Simulators to even get started…

Sorry, rant over, I was expecting so much more from it the way people spoke about it here…

In the end, I persisted and got it. Yes, it’s actually a very good game. However, the pissing about bits trying to get the roads to connect are a bit annoying, really.

It’s also clearly mature in its fans, in the sense they start a video, “I’m only using the usual three mods, you all know what they are”. I don’t…

I’m also lost somewhat on things like railway lines, there’s a line running out in the sticks, can I connect to this… I suspect I’ll just find another SD thread which covers this sort of stuff though. Still, a good game for Free, after finishing the first Tombraider, also free, I enjoyed the combat on that one, far too many cutscenes though.

i tried skylines out on the XBGP and couldn’t figure out how to attach the power lines …people moved in anyways then were pissed they had no power and moved out …

I can’t quite work out the reach of them, I can see the areas covered by water supply, but the much more troublesome (ie: blocks roads and can’t build on) power lines just need to be ran roughly near where I want them, I assume…

If you enjoyed the first TR game, try the second and third when you have time. I feel like it’s a series that actually learned from its previous games without changing up the formula too much. Most notably, better pacing and fewer Quick-Time button mashing Events.

If you aren’t video-ed out, here’s a nice video for brand new users posted by ‘City Planner Plays’ (he’s a city planner in real life, I think) made shortly after a previous Epic store giveaway. Pure vanilla; no DLC, no mods, nada. It’s targeted directly at people in your situation.

This was my bible starting out.

Also, here’s my start, which is very similar to the video above. I had considered starting over but decided against it, but since I practiced the first half hour in anticipation of restarting anyway, figured might as well. There’s no commentary.

After 30 minutes I have no loans to pay back, $60K cash on hand and am generating $4k per week. With landscaping unlocked and this kind of budget situation, I would probably leave it like this for several game decades while I undertook a ridiculously noobtastic grading project to make the entire map flat as a sheet of ice and perfectly rectangular.

I stick with dirt roads until bike lane roads (not vanilla, requires After Dark) are unlocked, which happens at Busy Town, the achievement I get to at the end of the video. So I’d probably do my massive grading project first, then upgrade the roads, then start expanding.

The three main details I do differently than City Planner Plays (aside from my ultra-rigid grid discipline) are that my grids are 14x10 instead of 15x10, I don’t zone any buildings directly on my collectors – instead leaving a single space next to them for pedestrian tunnels and bridges – and I don’t use arterials. I only have two road classifications in my design: 4-lane collectors and 2-lane local roads.

Demons tilt free this week on Epic but it appears that next week is City of Brass, and Total War: Warhammer. I thought the latter might be a big deal for some never played either TW or WH.

Nice, I’m one of those never-played WH types and am mildly interested.

I might actually be approaching the end of my Cities Skylines experience. I don’t really see myself playing a second map, and yesterday I made huge strides toward finishing my first map.

Thanks for this. I’m a sucker for pinball games.

City of brass and Total war: warhammer on Epic this week. Weirdly I clicked the first, then when I went to the second, I seemed to own it already. It’s possible they gave it away before and already had it for free and forgot, but perhaps not.

Epic often repeats games on their giveaways. It is easy to forget if you have one already, especially if you never played it.

I got City of Brass as a freebie a year or so ago from Epic. It’s definitely a repeat.

I checked my emails where I don’t delete the epic receipts and it wasn’t there. I suspect there’s some sort of linked buy here, I mean it’s free, who would be bothered?

I think if you have your Epic account linked to GOG or similar it will indicate the game is in your library even if you didn’t get it from Epic and got it from the linked service.

That is possible, perhaps prime gaming stuck it through a linked account. There seemed to be loads around Christmas and we were away and I just accepted whatever ones they had… Glad I’m not going mad. Or rather more mad.

Even weirder, I swear they gave away Hands of Fate 2 at one point and it was in my library. I went to install it 9 months or so ago and it was gone.

They gave away Hands of Fate 2 about a year ago (April 22, 2021). It is in my library so they didn’t remove it (FWIW).
