French Fries

Salt and malt vinegar is by far the best condiment for fries. Though Old Bay to replace the salt is an intriguing idea. Also, the mark of the Truly Good Fry is the one that does not require any condiment. Just salt.

I’ve also been known to douse my fries with lime and hot pepper or simply loads of Tabasco. Mayo is okay, but cramps up my stomach. I love mustard, but it belongs nowhere near a French fry. I hate ketchup, but on fries it’s acceptable. Gravy is good, too, and I’ve always wanted to taste those curds and gravy fries they have up in Canada. They got some funny Frenchy name for 'em. Barbeque sauce is acceptable as well. So are any of the weird brown sauces they have in Britain (HP or whatnot.) However, A1 on fries is disgusting. The Germans have this curryesque sauce which they sell with fries, and that’s definitely not bad.

Yeah, we have that sauce too in Holland. I guess the closest English thing is “tartar sauce”, as mentioned above.

Me, I like them as the Belgians (not the French) invented them: big, and drowning in sour Belgian mayonaise. Occasionally, the much sweeter Duch mayonaise can be nice, too.

I won’t bother with the rest of you barbarians, putting ice cream and cheese and other assorted shit on the Holy Fry. You are obviously the product of a culture gone mad.

Anahita’s had her fries on both sides of the pond, and guess what she likes? Mayo. So there.

Fry sauce. It’s a Utah thing, and it’s really good, but if you’re not in Utah or Idaho, try stirring together mayo and ketchup.

I also like homemade mayo on my fries.

Or tartar sauce is good too.

And sometimes malt vinegar and salt.

And aoli is good too. Yummmmmmmmmmmm

Any of these:

butterscotch pudding

bbq sauce

dijon mustard

plain mayonnaise

ranch dressing
I don’t like ketchup on my fries very often; ironically though, my absolute most adored potato chip flavour is ketchup. Go figure.

Depends on where I am. If it’s available, I’ll take vinegar over anything else but most of the time this is only at home. At a barbecue place, I’ll put some of their sauce on my fries. At McD’s with condiment pumps, I’ll put BBQ sauce in a cup and top with ketchup, sometimes sweet & sour in between. I only use plain ketchup if I have no other choice.

andygirl dips her french fries in Wendy’s Frosties.

While waiting for the hamsters to post this, I realized how dirty that sounds…

Poutine. Pronounced poo-teen.

Coronary in a styrofoam bowl.

Ya gotta love it.

I second Wendy’s Frosties. Potatoes and frozen deserts ought not go together, but Wendy’s fries and Frosties were made to go together.

Did I browse too fast, or has no one chimed in with a Homeresque “mmm…fries” yet?

What goes on fries? Well, if they’re good enough, nothing but salt. But here’s my list anyway… (I really need to start trying to participate over in GD…)

Chili & Cheese
Heinz 57
Mustard (any variety, but mostly yeller)
Ketchup (rarely)
Catsup (also rarely, but amost not as close to rarely as Ketchup)
Fancy Ketchup (only when I’m serving my sweetie a candlelit dinner of chops, fries and wine)
Malt Vinegar (when I go to Long John Silver)
Frank’s Hot Wing Sauce (I put this on just about everything)
Tabasco (when I’m feeling frisky)

I once received a gift basket (you know, the manly kind with meats, cheese, & auto wax) that had a bottle of stuff called “Some Dude’s Fry Sauce”. It was ok. Just thought I would mention it.

Whenever I order Buffalo wings, I ask for several extra containers of blue cheese dip. I know it’s meant for the veggies, but I dip the wings and the sauced-up fries in it.

Yummilicious. Is it lunchtime yet?

Scott, as a former resident of Buffalo, NY, I can assure you that the blue cheese dressing is indeed meant for the wings as well as the celery and/or carrots. (I’m veg but I still have plenty of first-hand knowledge of these things.)

Interesting. The place I order wings from only includes one thingie of blue cheese dip, and it’s in the container with the celery and carrots. That’s why I have to order extra.

I agree with MachV - chili and cheese!

the best…

1 - 99 cent Wendy’s Biggie Fry,
1 - 99 cent Wendy’d chili,
dump together into bowl
cover with shredded Velveeta,
microwave 45-60 seconds,
eat with fork

Heaven!

I like either McDonalds Sweet and Sour Sauce, vinegar, or ketchup. All with added salt on the fries first.

HEEE!! Some of you have reminded me of what I occassionally use as well!

Chili Cheese (Yummy, but rare for me!)
Cheddar(Also rare and only at Arby’s, although I could make cheddar or whatever cheese myself for fries…eehheeh)
BBQ Sauce(But only if I’m having BBQ)

My first instinct is to retch at the frozen deserts/puddings with fries, but maybe I shouldn’t knock 'em until I’ve tried it, yes? After all, I always wanted to try fries with various sorts of dressings. HEheh

Mmm… This thread is making me hungry.

I think I’ll grab a poutine from the diner on the corner tonight.

There are a myriad of variations upon the poutine theme. Some involve chicken, peas, Alfredo sauce (blech), smoked meat… Italian poutine is especially popular. Instead of the gravy they put on meat sauce (the kind you’d have with pasta).

You’re lucky, Scott. There’s no Poutine in Florida.

And it sounds damned good…

Fries and gravy (cream). At the diner my friends and I all went to as terrible teens this is the most popular appetizer.

Most of the time I only take my fries with salt, especially McDonalds fries, they just don’t taste right with Ketchup. I will use Ketchup on other fries, occasionally. I have also used mayo, Miracle Whip(preferred), BBQ sauce(that one works ok with McD fries), and vinegar.

I see Chili cheese fries as a whole 'nother entity, so I didn’t include it above. Same goes for cheese fries(and I mean REAL cheese). Doesn’t anybody else on this board have a Boardwalk fries near them?

P.S. I am not, nor have I ever been a resident of Buffalo, NY, and I too will attest to the purpose of the bleu cheese that accompanies wings, is in fact, to dip the wings into. Ranch works very good for this purpose, as well. Ranch is also a wonderful pizza topper.
