I’m trying to figure out what to stock my storm shelter with. How long does beef jerky last in an unopened package?
I’m thinking it will last practically forever. (I do not believe the taste will degrade for the short term) Unopened.
But one tiny mice bite and it’s done.
(Not sayin’ your storm shelter is pest ridden)
I’d put it in one those 5 gallon buckets with the lid on good. That would be a good seat too.
One storm season it should be fine.
Depends a lot on the moisture content, but the shelf life of commercially made jerky is generally only 1 year.
Stored in opaque, airtight containers with oxygen absorbers might get you another few months, but it’s definitely not going to keep forever.
Dried to the point where it doesn’t bend and becomes powder when ground, and stored as above it will last several years. Dried to that point and frozen will get you much closer to “forever.”
Sorry. Yeah, forever is a long long time.
It will last long enough for a season, for sure.
(Unless you have dogs. Then you might get through one storm)
Although if you have dogs, there’s 50-100 lbs of food on the hoof as it were. Per dog. Stays fresh indefinitely until you harvest it.
Didn’t you already ask this question @Malkav23?
