Well, talk about your big fake out. Hadn’t we been hearing recently about how Leonard Nimoy had officially retired from acting? Oh sure, he lent his voice to a Big Bang Theory episode and there was that likeness of him encased in amber a couple of episodes back. But I figured that all pointed to never seeing him on screen again. So what a wonderful surprise. Kind of an information age-fueled surprise, I guess.
What was the deal with Peter and Olivia entering those two buildings, which they would have good reason to believe contained the bad guy (or guys), without backup, or at least without guns drawn? I’m surprised they made it to the roofs. Which come to think of it, why did Jones allow them to reach the roofs. And why’d he go after Peter first if Olivia was the target?
I had a feeling without really knowing why (maybe the look on his face), that Bell meant Jones was the “Bishop”. It’ll be interesting to see how they bring Jones back from the dead again.
Per your first question, I’ll throw a “what does this mean?” right back at you.
On your third question; what I was trying to say was, all the talk about Nimoy’s ‘retirement’ added to the surprise of his character’s reappearance on the show. In the days before vast amounts of information were available to just about everybody, a character thought dead returning to a TV show might be a surprise. But when reports have been telling us that the actor has retired and his character returns, played by the ‘retired’ actor, well, that’s a BIG surprise.
When Bell was going on to Jones about sacrificing the bishop, I felt like Jones really ought to have piped up and said, “Just curious … I wouldn’t happen to be the bishop, would I?” It seemed so obvious what was going on right then that I didn’t even think about the name of chess piece / name of Peter and Walter pun that the writers were undoubtedly going for.
At the very least, if I was Jones and I didn’t suspect that Bell meant me, I would have still verified that he meant Walter or Peter. Jones was a very smart man. I’m really surprised he fell for it so easily.
Ok, am I miss-understanding what happened in this episode or did Jones cook up this convoluted plan involving satellites shooting laser beams at Boston to blow up the city, all as a miss-direction to separate Peter and Olivia so that he could attack (and presumably kill) Peter - with a crowbar? What, would bringing a gun have complicated the plan too much?
As evil master-mind plans go, this one was somewhat lacking, wasn’t it? It reminded me too much of Mr. Burns scheme to block out the sun so he could sell more electric power. “Ever since the beginning of time, man has yearned to destroy the sun. I shall do the next best thing: block it out.”
Nice to see John Nobles daughter in there as the Doctor at the asylum…
And while tracking that down, it shows how good an actor John Noble is that I’ve been watching him 4 seasons, spotted him in an old Stargate SG-1, and only just noticed from the credits on imdb, that he was Denethor in Return of the King…
It didn’t seem to me that Bell provided the specifics, just that he suggested that Jones take out ‘the Bishop’ and Jones created and executed the actual plan.
