Frustrating techincal Palm/PC question.

I’m really stuck here. I had a palm IIIxe that worked beautifully and then one day out of the blue it would not sync with the PC. I called tech support and we tried everything except hooking it up to another computer because I’m not able to do so. It was determined that my palm was in need of service but it really was cheaper to just get a new one which I wanted any way. So jump ahead to yesterday, my new palm, an m130, comes Whooppeee!! But it won’t sync either. It uses a USB port not serial like the other. It says the port is in use by another application! HUH? Okay, I unplug everything else and try all the ports. No luck. I’ve made sure the right things are checked in hotsync manager. When I plug the other usb devices in they work fine on all ports. I ran usbview.exe and it cannot detect the palm. No matter which port I try. It does detect everything else (scanner, digital camera, modem, and mp3 player). I sent my old palm to my brother (I really did want a new one). He called and it works on his computer. I’ve tried uninstalling and doing a clean install and I plan on calling palm support tonight but I don’t think it’s the palm or the cradle, I think it’s something on my 'puter telling it that it’s not really there. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about finding out if it’s a corrupt file or some such thing, or got any suggestions on what else I could try?

Ok. I am going to say that your operating system or some piece of installed software has caused your machine to be incompatible with the software used to sync with the palm.
I say that because you’ve tested 2 different ports, and they both refuse to sync with your palm.
As a desperate measure, I’d reccomend reinstalling Windows. There may be a less invasive procedure that would fix it, but I wouldn’t know what it would be.
BTW, congrats on the M130. I got one to replace the M105 a friend sat on, and I love it.

Oh man I was afraid of that. I truely am afraid to mess with stuff too much, and reinstalling windows sounds like a whole lot of messing. Just how complicated is it? Should I be shaking or is it not really that hard. I really don’t want to screw anything up. I think I’ll wait to see what palm support says but I’m sure they’ll say I have a PC problem they can’t help with.
