My faith in humanity is raised by those Americans who devote their lives to fighting the death penalty and helping those on death row, many of whom are innocent. These people are heroic and the history of civilization will record them as such.

You do realize that the vast majority of people who even go to trial are guilty. They’ve already been through several “gates.” First the police, then the DA’s office, then a grand jury. If a jury and then an appeals court also find them guilty, then you’ve got a pretty good chance that they are, in fact, guilty.
Does that mean that it’s impossible to convict someone innocent? No. But to state that there are “many” innocent people on death row is probably overstretching the truth greatly.

Upper middle-class people (of any race, OJ aside) typically do not commit the crimes for which one is usually sentenced to death. Typically, most murders are, IMHO, committed by lower-income people “without money or social status.” Are there exceptions? Sure. But I’m willing to bet that the overwhelming majority of murders (usually the crime for which death is the penalty) are not committed by “upper middle class” people.

OK, how about this argument: No, I’m not a Death penalty supporter that believes it serves as a deterrent. I used to, but having experienced the way that criminals think, I came to realize that many of them are really sub-humans who can’t contemplate consequences to their actions. IMO they have dehumanized themselves by their actions.
The Death Penalty to me is about vengeance - IMO. And I know I’ll lose a lot of respect by saying this, but…I want vengeance. If someone kills in deliberate, brutal, heinous manner, I want them to die. Pure and simple. Even after 17 years, I still want them to. I would pay good money for the priveledge to throw the switch, too.
That having been said, I think you need to simmer down and retract some “points” in your OP, otherwise you are going to lose both a lot of respect and friends here really quickly.

Those who hold a different point of view from mine are not ignorant. I would certainly hope that the reverse is felt to be true. It’s not the people backing one side of an issue I get hot about, it’s the issue itself – and even then, I try to use facts where I can.

That having been said, I’ve turned away from supporting the death penalty. Vengence doesn’t correct the wrongs that were done and being in jail without the possibility of release is a pretty harsh reality anyway. The one thing that humans have over the worms in my garden is that the humans have the potential to be something greater, to realize the wrongs of their life and help others not follow down the same path. Admitedly most for life prisoners just remain pond scum.
As to the OP, lets not kid ourselves here. Most the folks on death row aren’t anyone you’d ever want to encounter on the street and the world isn’t going to miss them.
I disagree slightly. Putting people in jail does not correct the wrongs that were done either. I think the death penalty is useful, not as a deterrent (because most people who are going to kill aren’t really thinking about the penalties anyway) but as a punishment. HOWEVER, I also believe that the severity of the punishment should be left to the victim’s family to determine and in the absence of a family the state should decide.
I do not believe that it should be swift route to execution because of the margin of error in convicting someone who is innocent, and because I agree that they should be given the opportunity “to realize the wrongs of their life and help others not follow down the same path.”

Oh, get off your fucking high horse. Hanssen is not being sent to the death chamber because the prosecutor and the FBI feel that it is vital to find out as much as possible what he knows and what he sent off to the Russians. So it’s part of a plea bargain- Hanssen gets to rot in jail, the FBI gets information out of him. In addition, the FBI can keep coming back to him for more info if they feel it necessary. Conversely, the FBI felt that they had gotten all the information they needed from McVeigh on his little ‘conspiracy’.
Yes, it has been shown that those given the death penalty are more likely to be poor and more likely to be black than those given life in jail for the same crimes. But if you’re going to try and give an example, choose one that’s fucking correct, okay? Idiot.

Aww, I think the death penalty is a good thing, and should be employed more often. Anybody who commits a murder should be sent to meet their maker.(knowingly commits murder, accidental murders, manslaughter, no) But then again, I think that anybody that gets a speeding ticket shouldn’t be able to get it off their record.
