Translation: she’s terrified she’ll say something stupid. The same reason she never does any media at all outside the talk radio/Fox News green zone, where nobody will ask her how to spell “cat.”
And seriously, she’s “glad she kept Willow away from the guy?” She thinks David Letterman is going to rape her daughter. What a vicious little moron she is.
I think the joke makes a good psychological test. If you think the joke was directed toward Sarah Palin and her inability to keep her (nonspecific) kids from getting knocked up, you are normal.
If you assume the joke is about raping a 14-year old, you are the sick puppy.
There were lots of jokes at Chelsea’s expense. She was not real pretty when she was young. They called her a dog and were quite insulting. I did not think much of the people who thought that was funny. They were mostly right wingers.
Palin is captured by a contradiction. She professes a strong religious faith and claims her ways raise better kids. But her kid had sex and got knocked up. That is far more interesting to play with. It contradicts her on many levels.
But Letterman is a comic. Humor sometimes misses. I doubt he wrote the material anyway. it is not the same as just being mean .
Here’s a clue for you and FriarTed:
You don’t fact check jokes.
And your average audience member doesn’t go rushing to Google to check up on who was at the game also.
And it was a bad joke, easy to write and not very funny. You could have done almost the same one 10 years ago substituting Clinton for A-Rod and White House for baseball game. Fill-in-the-blank jokes show the writing team ran out of creativity that night.
Meh. Different sense of humor I guess. Still, a joke is a joke. Funny or not (depending on the listener), it’s still nothing more than that.
Added on edit:
Can you use the behavior of kids to judge people, though? I mean, Al Gore takes a pretty tough moral stand on behalf of the environment and Tipper Gore was famously involved in the effort to regulate the content of popular music.
This didn’t keep their son from dabbling in various drugs and endangering the public with his car on several occasions. Indeed, from a public safety standpoint we’re in more danger from the Gore children than the Palin kids, collectively speaking.
And I don’t mean to say in this that Al and Tipper Gore were bad parents at all - certain incidents or even whole kids going bad aren’t necessarily indications of your parenting skills.
Bunch of Guys: But Bristol wasn’t at the game, so it’s not about her!
Bunch of Other Guys: Who gives a shit where Bristol was? It’s about her because she’s the one the got knocked up.
BoG: But Bristol wasn’t at the game, so it’s not about her!
BoOG: Letterman probably assumed it was her when he heard Palin was there with her kid.
BoG: But Bristol wasn’t at the game, so it’s not about her!
BoOG: The exact location of Bristol Palin is irrelevant. It was intended to be a joke about the abstinence-only lady having a knocked up kid. Factual accuracy not required.
BoG: But Bristol wasn’t at the game, so it’s not about her!
BoOG: (Sigh)
The whole thread really should have gone more like this…
Everyone: It’s funny because Sarah Palin’s kid is a whore…
What is the saying… “Do as I preach, not as I practice” or “Do as I say, not as I do.”
She is a preachy little whiner isn’t she. Reminds me of Lindsay Lohan’s mother.
And what about the decades of Michael Jackson sleeps with underage boys jokes?
Where was Palin to defend all those boys from horrible jokes.
We must keep our sons away from people like Leno, Letterman, Conan, and their like.
I think timing is everything. Al Gore’s son is fair game, but the problem is that Tipper’s censorship crusade, Al’s emergence as eco-crusader, and Al Jr.'s* arrest are all separated by 22 years, so connecting them for humor purposes is a bit more of a stretch.
Also, when Al Jr. was arrested, he was 24, well into full-formed adulthood. His decisions as an adult are less a reflection of his parents guidance (and supervision) than those of an underage Bristol still in the protective nest, so to speak. The hypocrisy in her mother’s case is more about things transpiring right under her nose without her knowledge.**
*yes, Al Jr. is actually the III because the former VP is Jr., I know
**though I’m sure Sarah did know about her daughter’s activities, which makes the “Do as I say, not as I do” preachiness even more conspicuous
See, if young Gore’d been dumping oil into fresh water, or shouting obscenities on CD’s, that woulda been funny.
I know, it’s not fair. I can’t make a liberal counterpart for every ironic conservative hypocrisy. On the other hand, you guys get all the money. Deal.
Fair enough. If someone made a lame crack like that about my daughter, I’d be disinclined to come on his show, too. And the quote from their spokesperson, “Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman,” sounds to me like a joke, and not a bad one.
