'Bout a week and a half ago I came back from my family reunion to find the window smashed out of my car. There was cash in the center console, but what did they take? The headrest. That’s right, the fucking headrest. The window was $160 and the headrest is going to be about $80 but I haven’t replaced that yet. None of it was covered by my insurance. Pictures here, here, here, and here. Oh and by the way, the theme of the family reunion was how my uncle’s house burned to the ground that morning, my grandfather has terminal brain cancer, and my great uncle has a few weeks to live. Depressing.
Then yesterday I got fired. Yea, I said in another thread that I quit but it didn’t quite work like that. See, I told my boss awhile back that I was considering going to school fulltime in the fall and if I did I wouldn’t be able to work for him fulltime. He freaked out because he thought I was going to take off without any notice. I assured him, nay, gave him my word as a man, that I would work until he replaced me or two full weeks, whichever came first/was most convenient for him. Yesterday he called me into his office and said he didn’t think my heart was in it. What this meant was basically that he had replaced me behind my back. He freaked out about me not giving notice and then turned around and did the same thing to me that he didn’t want me to do to him!
Then this morning I woke up to find my car had been smashed into in the night. Hit and run. Pics here, here, and here. My insurance deductable is $1,000 and I don’t have a job. Not sure if you can tell from those pics but the fender is smashed nice and tight against the wheel, insuring that the car is undrivable.
Yeah, that’s much clearer. I’ve been hit-and run in a parking lot before, but nowhere near that bad. ( only had one door partially smashed in, everything still worked).
The two events happening so close sounds a little suspicious to me. Perhaps someone with no sense of honor has a vendetta against you?
Sorry to read about your troubles. I’d say that it can’t get worse, but with my luck I’m afraid a meteor would hit you.
All I can hope is that you’ll realize that you’ll bounce back in some way. Just keep pushing forward. Your car may be fucked, but not you, and you’ll get beyond these set of troubles to find all new troubles tomorrow.
I’d say “one day you’ll look back on this and laugh”, Cisco, but you probably won’t. You will probably look back on it and think, " I lived through that shit, God knows how, so this ain’t so bad."
It all just thoroughly bites. Which you already know, in abundance. There’s a certain scant comfort to be found in purely random, idiotic misfortune though, namely that you didn’t invite or cause any of it. Hey, technicolor bad luck trumps guilt every time. You can dine out, i.e. cadge free drinks, for years with well-told tales of spectuacular misfortune, whereas guilt is so dreary and common it pretty much relegates ya to sipping cooking sherry during Oprah reruns.
As for the car, it might be driveable as long as you can wrench the fender away from the wheel. Stray parts may snap off, from the looks in the picture. At least you have pictures. Get yerself as mobile as possible and worry about the rest later.
Is it any consolation that maybe some day far down the road, when all this has passed and everything is well, you’ll be out drinking with some good friends and you’ll drunkenly blurt out, “Remember that time someone stole the headrest from my car? The fucking headrest!” And everyone will laugh because it’s just so damn absurd.
I don’t mean to make it sound like I’m making light of your situation. That’s some awful luck you ran into, and I hope everything gets better soon! But man oh man, the headrest? Strange!
I try not to let things like this get me too down (hence the “thumbs up” picture), but when it rains it does indeed pour.
One the brighter side, I just got a call from a police officer. Apparently one of my neighbors saw the hit and run happen and chased the guy down  .
The jerkbag that did it stopped a little ways down the road to check the damage to his own car and my neighbor caught up to him. His two passengers got out and they were all talking and then the driver jumped back in his truck and took off, leaving his two “friends”, who were totally cooperative. Luckily they got his license plate number and the cop said it’s only a matter of time until they nail the guy.
I don’t know who my neighbor is but I would like to find out because I owe him a HUGE thank you. Hopefully the dickwhistle that did it has insurance.
I’m still out of a job, my grandpa is still dying, I’m still out the money for the smashed window and possibly the thousand bucks for my insurance deductable, but for some reason I feel a lot better knowing they’re going to find this guy. Maybe I’m just relieved that it was an accident and not some nefarious ne’er-do-well out to get me .
