Dogs and cats both go into point, then proceeded to pounce. A shock collar interrupts this, and they stay in point until you command them to flush the covey. They’ll naturally chew the bird after retrieving it, and there’s probably a high-tech fix for that; but a rubber band with thumbtacks around the bird is the traditional method.
Noem has already Tweeted (Xd) about this and she was not denying any of it. She was trying to justify it.
How Guilfoyle ever passed the Bar exam is beyond me much less managing to become a DA.

Hmm, not that I’ve heard. Pointing, flushing, and retrieving, is what I remembered from my dog book reading days.
Can’t seem to link but google seems to agree with me. Maybe when they hunt rodents/rabbits? It doesn’t make sense to me, because a small prey animal killed by a dog wouldn’t be fit to eat.
My goodness, Kimberly Guilfoyle’s face has become…off-putting. Even if she’s going for “idiot clown villain,” she needs to dial it back a bit.

It’s that it’s a puppy who was killed for not having yet been sufficiently trained. (In the breed in question, 14 months is still a puppy.) The actions of the dog are not abnormal or particularly dangerous. You have to train them not to attack the birds and just track them. (And her attempt with a shock collar and just letting it hang out with trained dogs is not remotely sufficient.)
She tried to portray this as a dog who she had no choice but to kill, but that’s not what is there. It’s a puppy who the family had bonded with. (Hence her daughter’s questions.)
And, yes, domestic dogs are treated differently than wild animals. You’re expected to try other things before just killing them. That’s why she had to try and make it seem like she had no choice.
And, then killing a goat for being a goat (and not, say, for food) also confirmed this interpretation. As she says, she hated those animals. And hate is a lousy reason to kill.
I’ll be honest, when I first heard this story I was thinking about an Old Yeller or even Cujo situation with an aggressive dog that went after other animals and bit people. That kind of dog might need to be humanely euthanized (which can mean something different to a farmer in South Dakota). However, apparently the biggest problem was not that the dog was vicious but that it was an excitable puppy. She tells how happy the day was on the hunt even while misbehaving. Maybe it was untrainable. There are better answers than shooting it.

I am still so angry over this story, this 20-year-old story, and it becomes vivid every time I think of it. God damn Noem. Poor Cricket.
My father used to train black Labradors for retrieving. Dad hunted ducks.
When our family got a dog, when I was 6, Dad knew of no other way to train the dog. So, he did. Our miniature poodle never hunted ducks, but could sit and stay, come on a whistle, walk to heel, chase a frisbee, and be otherwise, a well-trained black Lab, in spite of being a miniature poodle. In other words, a fine family pet. We had cats after that poodle went naturally, and they lived good long lives.
You don’t throw away animals, as Ms. Moem apparently did. Once you take on the responsibility for them, they are yours until the end of their natural lives. If you do not choose to take on the responsibility for them, you can look for willing owners or you can give them up to a shelter. Ms. Noem chose what to me is a cruel and unthinkable option.

Nope. Turns out this is a loser even in MAGA world (with some especially psycho exceptions). Reporting from insiders say her chances for VP were always slim, but they’re now zero. Even Trump understands that people love dogs. Yes, that crowd loves cruelty—directed toward the people they hate. Leave puppies out of it.
