Ha, I was thinking Pleasantville too, though more along the lines of J.T. Walsh. Tobey Maguire was the one who was trying to enlighten people to the joys of a world in color. Walsh wanted to stay in black and white. Starving Artist wants to go back and stay in the black and white world.
I love that movie. When an orgasm makes a tree catch on fire…wow!
Freckled people shouldn’t marry or have any civil rights, you know. They’re too flamboyant and should not be out in public where the rest of us have to look at them.
But remember how Tobey’s character was totally in love with the show and pissed as hell at Reese’s character because she was sowing color willy nilly and it really upset him–he only came around to seeing how evil it is to keep 3D people trapped in a 2D world from watching the agony Joan Allen’s character went through, and the conflict of trying to comfort Jeff Daniels–if it hadn’t been for Reese there wouldn’t have been a speck of color in Pleasantville, ever. Tobey LIKED it that way, precisely since he perceived it as a retreat from a world he found too complicated and frightening. He learned to embrace chaos and uncertaintly for the innovation, wonder and beauty it brings… SA is unwilling or unable to make that leap, to embrace diversity for the delight it is in spite of the increased risk of conflict. Guess that’s why there’s vanilla AND chocolate, huh?
What does this even mean?! I can’t even get a sense of what you’re criticizing him about. I’m guessing at the criticism part since there are a lot of pejorative terms.
At least when Starving Artist posts, I understand the point he’s trying to make. Whether one agrees with him or not probably has more to do with one’s politics.
But with your post, I don’t even understand what you’re trying to convey.
Something I just remembered. When it came out there were a lot of right-wingers who are hissing at the movie, really lambasting it. At the time I couldn’t figure out why, but now I know!
They were all Starving Artist and his cohorts! (come on SA, admit it, you hung around rec.arts.movies, yeah?)
Well, don’t judge us too quickly, there’s a lot more than just Doris Day and Ron Howard, you know. (And Howard isn’t even actually freckled, that’s just added in post-production, when needed to conform to the stereotype of the naive and innocent 'tard).
I’m pretty sure there are no formal legal restrictions on marrying the freckled. If anyone ever wanted to, that is.
Anyway, I’ve long had the impression that many usernames sprang from private jokes or lines the user liked from some obscure book or movie or whatever and bear absolutely no relation to their day-to-day postings. If the guy’s a jerk, he’d be a jerk regardless of his username.
I wish more people would remember that before lashing out at usernames. I’m getting tired of the implication that I actually think I’m a member of the Illuminati or that I even think they’re real. I only picked this name because I was reading the Illuminatus! trilogy at the time, I swear!
So what is the Ricky Nelson song that everyone is bemoaning in the other thread? Is it “Travelin’ Man”? Because that’s the only song I really know of his.
