Somehow a whole ton of young people in the late 1960s and early 1970s managed to question how things were going at the time too. How did that happen? If anything, there was more religious participation then than now.

Not the women. Yet many of them participated in questioning the status quo of the time too.
And the point is that both men and women managed to make some decisions of their very own, based on info they sought out themselves that didn’t go along with what their government (and in many cases their own parents) wanted them to do.
But this isn’t about then anyway, so I’ll drop that.
It’s about now. And laziness and willful ignorance.
The thing is, there are now millions of people in this country who believe they’re doing exactly that. I’m not getting information from the television, I’m getting it from my phone. I’m not getting it from the government expert, I’m getting it from BagelDog91 who seems to have inside information on things that feel right. I’m not listening to the President, I’m listening to renegade outsider Elon Musk, who must know things because he’s a “self-made billionaire who didn’t follow the rules.” I’m not listening to research backed by Big Pharma. I’m doing my own research. I’m independent. I’m centrist. I’m smarter than the sheep on the right and left. That’s why I’m casting an anti-establishment vote for Trump. I know I’m doing something right, because the normies hate me."
It’s the same dynamic in play as the 60’s. The main difference is the media environment is 100% captured by corporate interests, augmented by their ability to micro-target propaganda to the specific districts and demographics they need. It also helps that they’ve gutted education to the extent that lots of non-college people have effectively zero media literacy, and the college-educated have so much debt that they can’t afford to take risks in challenging anyone or anything.
And lest we put this all on the young people, it’s no accident that a lot of those 60’s warriors with the “all-natural” mindset are lining up to support Robert F. Kennedy. In many ways Trump is the symmetrical closing arc to the plot of the 60’s.
That and racism and bigotry. Trump has allowed these people to show them selves for who they are.
They want to be bullies too, they ADMIRE that SOB.

The world I want to see involves us putting aside old tribal instincts and superstitions and working together; using our intellect, to solve problems in objective reality. When humans do this, it’s a beautiful thing and nothing can stop us.
Trump and MAGA is the polar opposite of all this, being built entirely on lies, ignorance and hate. And a majority of American voters have decided that that is the world they want to see. It’s an unimaginable step backwards for progress and America.
I am going to have to avoid American politics for the next 4 years, there is going to be a non-stop succession of the worst possible people being granted absolute power and injustices around every corner.

The paranoid part of my brain says the democratic DOJ was “in on” the destruction of this country just as much. Four years and none of the big fish were ever even charged!
It is a quandary.
The argument that “a sitting president can’t be charged with a crime” doesn’t really hold, because he’s not a sitting president yet and the trial is already over bar the imminent sentencing. But I’m sure it will all go away quietly like every other remaining vestige of justice and decency the country is still barely clinging to.
Curious that the OP didn’t add a fuck you to all of the Democrats in swing states that sat home and didn’t vote.

They are going to rule his sentence suspended until his term is over, which means he will never be sentenced. This is due to a memo in the justice department dating back to Nixion. It’s never been tried legally and will not be now.
They are still operating within the current normal rules for the next 3 months.

I would normally consider this to be a gross exaggeration, and calmly point out our system of checks and balances. But seeing how the Senate, SCOTUS, and (likely the) House will be under GOP/conservative control, it is very possible we’re truly fucked.

(I had to wait until I got home from helping run our election site on Tuesday…I could tell something was up when not many people voted in person during the evening hours. Obviously we don’t look or know how anyone voted until we push that button on the machine after polls close, but I could tell. Our purple county ended up leaning toward Harris, but not nearly enough.)
