Fuck WeatherTech (car mats and liners)

It must be a great trial to be you.

When you hear someone claim “It’s not about the money”, it’s about the money.

I undoubtedly could have had the correct mats at no extra cost, or a refund that included my return shipping costs, or at least a full refund of the order amount by following up with “Dan.”

It was more important to me (and worth the $30) to see if WeatherTech’s “heart” was where their gigantic mouth is. It wasn’t. They had five chances to stand up to their own standards, and they blew every one.

If I’m the asshole here because I chose not to be bought off in private, and while they have still not fixed the root problem, sign me “Asshole.”

Done here. Thanks for all the support.

Follow up. I’ve had my mats for about a year and a half and they are holding up great. I treat mine a bit roughly due to the nature of my work and they’ve performed very well.

I’m a customer for life.

So you should have known there was a good possibility there would be model and year specific issues?

I have two sets that are approaching ten years old and while they show some wear, they are completely serviceable and have remained so even in a much harsher climate than originally bought for.

I’d like to be, but one thing I (re)discovered in this misadventure is that many companies can do a great job as long as there’s no bump in the road… but are completely unable to handle that bump. Like people who have had Sprint or Comcast for years without a problem… because they’ve never had a problem. It’s the people who have to sort out some billing cock-up or service change and spend a week tearing their hair out that have lower opinions.

This was a simple issue that should never have happened. Having happened, it should have been resolved quickly and easily. Not getting resolved at all, even with repeated, patient effort by a loyal customer… it ended up in the hands of the big-name company owner and operator. Who screwed things up yet again.

I might buy another set, someday, given a new vehicle that needs them. But I will do it in a way that maximizes my ability to ensure I’m getting the right product and will be able to return or exchange it without weeks of jacking around by a company that spends millions a year to tell us how great they are.

Read the whole thread. It’s not about me choosing the wrong mats, per the manufacturer’s own web site.

I’d actually be happy to get some of these. Especially after the snow last year in Boston!

(Also, I’m a coffee klutz…)

But I’m a few years past “teenaged”, so yanno.

“Cock up” isn’t hyphenated, me old china.

Wow. Has it really been almost two years since the OP invented the reverse testimonial?

I’ve had a set in my VW Tiguan for two years, and they are excellent.

I got a set today. Man, they’re great, and they fit like a glove!

You’re not supposed to wear them on your hands!

What companies compete with weather tech?

(I think a pit thread like this should supply the readers with viable options… After all, we can’t hit WT where it hurts without knowing who else makes a good, form-fitting floor mat, if they are more or less expensive, and if they work to your expectations and satisfaction.)

Honestly, intentional or not, this pit thread is a WT advertisement.

With all of the crappy CS I have experienced over the years, I would have been thrilled to get someone to axtually reach out and try to make it right. I understand A.B.'s point of not wanting to reward the wrong behavior (and I think he is correct in that the company should make an effort to fix the problem UP FRONT, and not wait until someone complains on social media. However, the reality is that companies really DON’T care.)

Even A.B. suggests, after all of his ranting, that he “might buy another set.” :dubious: way to stand up to the corporate machine, dude! You paid $30 to give a set of WT mats a ride across the country, complained, and you will go back for more.

I doubt WT will change their business model.

Have you read the thread? The manufacturer posted offering to talk to the OP and see if the problem could be resolved. He refused to talk to them. As far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong with their products or their business model (although I’ve personally never bought anything from them).

Reading this thread years after the fact, it seems pretty clear what happened: the OP owns a 2003 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. Contrary to its name, the Outback Sport is NOT an Outback (which was a couple thousand more) but rather a trim level of the cheaper Impreza. He ordered floor mats for the “Outback” which is not the car he owns.

Subaru also deserves some blame for slapping the Outback label on their Impreza.

Nm

Nope, sorry. It’s a Legacy-based Outback.

Those ‘wrong’ mats don’t fit the Impreza-based one, either, as I’ve found out since. They’re generic shit WT shouldn’t be selling, not with their endless claims of laser-fitted perfection (and accurate database info).

And wrong again. I had a continuing correspondence with them, up to the owner/founder himself. We reached a reasonable accommodation… and then he screwed up on the follow-through of that. I gave up at that point.

Why do you keep mentioning the Legacy? It doesn’t matter what cars share the same platform as the interior layout can vary markedly. Either you own an Impreza Outback Sport or you own an Outback, full stop. The Legacy doesn’t enter into it. It’s possible that Weather Tech stocked the wrong floor mats for the 2003 Outback and you were the first person ever to notice. Or it’s possible you made some assumptions on your order (about shared platforms layouts or Outbacks) that led to you receiving the wrong mats. Determining which is more likely is an exercise left to the reader.
