It’s far more complex with than a simple double standard. Little girls don’t stuff themselves with Twinkies so that thay can look fat like the movie stars. Average sized women don’t loathe their bodies because they are not obese. Sex, sucess and happiness are not portrayed by the media as the sole domain of the hefty woman.

But as far as saying that skinny-star bashign is equivalent to fat bashing, or even fat star bashing? Not really, folks. Neither is nice behavior, of course, but they are hardly equivalent. Each incident of bashing does not occur in a vacuum.
Calista Flockhart is considered by most people, and certainly by the press, to be a pretty girl. She is referred to and treated as such by the show itself. It is supposed to be understood that she is considered a hottie. That is the starting point. So when some folks come along and deviate from that perception, it’s not nice, but neither is it devastatingly cruel. If Calista herself could see it, I’m sure it would hurt or bother her, but she could just go back to work, pick up another magazine, turn the page, and find herself being fawned over and held up as an example of beauty and femininity. She’d recover.
That is NOT true of fat people, or of, say Camryn Manheim. For Camryn, it is just the reverse. The show, the press, and the average Joe treat it as a given that she is unattractive because she is fat. It is her daily experience to see jokes, mean references, judgments, etc. It is a refreshing change of pace to have someone say “Hey wait, I think Camryn’s hot!”.
Again, not nice to bash anyone for their appearance. But don’t try to say that they are equivalent experiences.

This has got to be one of the most stupid OPs I have ever seen, but then again, look at the author.

Umm, yeah, she does kinda starve herself. Rememeber when she passed out on stage? That was because she quote “fogot to eat.” For 2 days! Also, a while back, she had her menu of the day printed in some magazine to prove she didn’t starve herself. My mom the dietician said that her menu choices were hardly enough to sustain someone for any length of time. That was a year ago.
And now she has a kid too. How irresponsible.
According to this week’s National Enquirer, she has gained 5 lbs.–largely because of her kid. Apparently, her priorities have shifted from starving herself to staying healthy to take care of the kid. They have some before and after shots. She is still very very skinny, but she looks a whole heck of a lot better.
IMHO, she’s not attractive. But I don’t think I’d say “fuck you” to anyone because I don’t think they are attractive. That just makes no sense at all.

I have had 4 operations to reconstruct one side of my face after a car accident. I thought I’d never be beautiful again. I thought nobody would ever love me. I was wrong, I’m happily married and will shortly be posting my wedding photos on the net for all to see. I am not stunningly gorgeous… few of us are. What I am is a kind, thoughtful, considerate and tolerant person.

Well, I didn’t make it up, I’ve seen it before. As to whether or not it’s a word, I didn’t find it in m-w.com, but I did find the following:

Frankly, I’m having a hard time understanding why Phlip cares so much about Ms. Flockhart. Don’t like the way she looks? Don’t watch the show. See that little red button in the corner of your remote control? That makes the BAD IMAGES go away.
Now, I’ve gone off Ally McBeal in a big way (why hasn’t this woman been committed or seriously medicated by now?), but I don’t find CF that hard to look at. She’s not my type by any means, but hardly one of the Gorgons. (Incidentally, if you want to see a somewhat “healthier” looking Flockhart, watch The Birdcage, the Robin Williams remake of La Cage aux Folles – she plays the fiancee.)
