Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Last two times the Colts have played the Broncos at the end of the season, they’ve lost. Last time they faced 'em in the playoffs, it was a blowout victory. Peyton Manning has prepared/is preparing like a workhorse for 17 games this year and won 12 of them (had he played three quarters against Denver I think the outcome might have been different). I wouldn’t count that team out. Should the Colts go out early this year you can bet I’ll be rather unhappy. Should the day of (relative) rest and preparation (and Manning getting some practice playcalling, which I didn’t expect to see but did enjoy watching) work, I think it’ll be a different story:)
And I don’t think it’s quite that I steadfastly defend the practice so much as that it has worked before for other teams. It works sometimes and it doesn’t work others. (By the way, re: screwing them twice, I don’t know enough to attribute their loss to the Dolphins to that same practice. Do you?) And as I said earlier in this thread, I certainly wanted to see Dungy play for the win, but I understand the reasoning behind not doing that. I happen to think the Colts showed enough in the way of usable game film and situations in 15 games that a 16th probably wouldn’t give the Broncos much more, but A) I ain’t the coach and B) there are damn good reasons for that.
I feel compelled to say that my disgust with the Eagles is that they took TWO weeks off, when they already have a bye week. Also, they were acting smug and self-important, like they were just playing in a whole different league and couldn’t be bothered with the Rams, who are also a playoff team. What would be sweet now is to see the Rams advance and beat the Iggles again in the second round. I say that even as a hater of Rams in general and Martz in specific.
I’ve nothing against the Colts. It would make for an entertaining Superbowl if the Colts played the Vikings. Bet the over.
None whatsoever. However, this thread doesn’t have anything to do with the last time the Colts made the playoffs. The OP is clearly ranting about sitting starters during meaningless games at the end of the regular season. The 2002 playoffs have everything to do with that when discussing the Colts, because that is a textbook example of why you don’t want to do it.
So the OP referenced an example that related to his OP, but he got some details wrong. You nitpicked those details in an effort to demonstrate that the OP was actually referencing an OT example, for what reason I have no idea. I simply brought it back on topic. I don’t understand why you are all hung up on the irrelevant mistaken details that have nothing to do with this thread.
I do truly apologize for the snarky comment. It wasn’t intended as snarky, but I understand it could be read that way. It was a re-write of “LOL”, which I loathe, and I didn’t want to use an emoticon. No "LOL"s or emoticons for months now, and I’m trying to keep it that way. Sorry if the verbage offended.
Going on the off-chance that we don’t want to get into more back-and-forth of nitpicking nitpicks, I won’t raise the rather retentive point that this thread doesn’t have anything to do with any number of topics raised after the OP was made;) I would actually argue that a subpar defense was why the Colts lost to the Jets, though I certainly lack the information to factually rebut claims citing other reasons. However, it doesn’t always hurt a team to effectively sit out the last game of the season ('91 Washington Super Bowl run being the example I raised, and I’m sure others exist in plentiful supply).
I’d be interested (but oh how I lack the resources to do it myself) in seeing a breakdown of the success rate of such a move, what mitigating factors were involved, etc. Since it’s a calculated coaching move, I’d expect there’d be something out there, though what’d be available to Joe Football Fan is beyond me.
He got so many details wrong that his comment made no sense to me - last Colts appearance? 2003! Didn’t get blown out in the first round. Last 13-3 record? First round bye, played the Titans and certainly didn’t get blown out…so where’s he coming from with this? - and his comment further seemed driven more out of exasperation than debate/discussion. I responded in kind.
Eh, no harm, no foul:) I tend toward emoticons mostly to reinforce my intended post mood. I’ll try to keep your preference (for not using them yourself) in mind next time the situation calls for it.
Well, I have to find it first. But I’m pretty sure it’s around somewhere because it’s a personal favorite of mine. It’s just Colts blue, with a basic “BALTIMORE” on top (curved) and “COLTS” on the bottom, and the ol’ horseshoe in the middle. It’s about a foot tall, I think.
Don’t ask how much I want. I really like it, so I probably want too much. Let’s see if I can ever find it first.
