Dog poisoning has become common where my parents live (rural New Brunswick). These fuckers throw poisoned meat into locked kennels on private property because everyone knows All Rottweilers Are Evil And Must Be Killed. The breeder our pup was purchased from had her entire kennel wiped out. Note these perfectly well trained dogs were never off their own property, never out of the kennel if not on a leash and not within miles of another residence.

Unfortunately for you, this is not the the law of the land in all areas of the United States. Leash laws do not exist in all areas of the United States. A dog wandering on the streets does not = free target practice or “criminal.” The laws about what you can do when a dog wanders onto your property vary, though in most places I’ve lived if you take to shooting dogs on your property you better have a lot better reason than, “I didn’t like it on my yard so I shot it as a first resort.”
As for your outlandish nuisance barkers comment, I’d lobby my local government to have asshole like you put down/relocated for living in the same region of the solar system as me and it’d make just as much sense legally.
I like to think I’m a restrained man but I am very attached to my animals. If one of them was killed like that and I ever caught the person I’d probably kill them with my bare hands, I try to keep a tight rein on my temper but no one is perfect.

You know what’s the worst about it? What kind of coward does something like this? Dog who doesn’t know any better, probably trusts people—and this sleazeball, sneaking around, not having enough guts to confront the owner. It’s just so cowardly and passive, it makes my skill crawl.

I’ve been attacked by a dog, too, and have the scar to prove it. I don’t go around poisoning or shooting dogs, or advocating that others do so.
I am horrified by the thought of someone intentionally poisoning a pet like that. My sympathies to you.
I really hope that someone can figure out who is doing this. It is not unheard of for people who start off by hurting animals to escalate to hurting people, so this is definitely someone who needs to be taken off the streets.

I lost my childhood dog to rat poison twenty years ago. We don’t know if someone intentionally poisoned him (the neighbor would be suspect #1) or if he just managed to find a poisoned rat and ate it. We lived out in the country without leash laws (back then). Everyone let their dogs run.
Now its a suburb and you’d never just let your dogs run.
I don’t think responsible pet owners would ever let their pets run loose. It’s just too dangerous for the animal to be allowed to do so. Not only because of the risk of psycho animal killers, but being run over by a car, attacked by another unconfined animal, stolen, etc. There are just too many risks out there.
I know two dogs killed by eating Christmas tree tinsel. And a friend just lost an indoor cat to Lego consumption. Indoor pets.

Shortly after my parents’ divorce when I was nine, I moved with my mom to a lousy neighborhood. When my brothers and I were out playing, we’d have our dog Buffy tied up to a tree in our front yard. The leash was short enough that she couldn’t set foot off our property. She did bark at everyone that came by, but it wasn’t an angry bark. Just a “hey, come pet me” bark. She never hurt a soul in the 15 odd years we had her.
I eventually made some enemies around town (kind of hard not to when you’re one of two white families in a black neighborhood). While playing out front, I slipped inside to get a glass of water leaving Buffy outside. When I looked out the window, I saw an asshole who had beaten the crap out of me several times coming up to my dog with a water dish. I ran outside to see what he was giving her. It was a bowl full of Windex. :mad:
Luckily she hadn’t drunk enough of it to kill her yet. We rushed her to the vet and got her taken care of, and she lived a long and happy life until she died a few years ago.
Needless to say, I’m really sorry for your loss Tango. Your OP created a lump in my throat. I’ll be praying for you and your family.

When I was a kid, a neighborhood “woman” poisoned two of our cats (along with numerous others).
Thankfully, she died a slow painful death from mouth cancer (she dipped snuff for 30-40 years).
Yeah, I know how that sounds, but she was a spiteful, hate-mongering, racist bitch. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
