Under what circumstances could anyone ever think that this is even remotely okay? How could they imagine any destiny other than eternal fire and brimstone? How can they sleep at night? I have no words.
the sick bastards who abuse and intentionally kill animals are a disgrace to all people! I hope they catch who is responsible and he/she is punished harshly for it.
Poor T-Bone and those other dogs.
Someone seems to be a coward, unable to express their view the right way. I know here the arguments between those for leash areas and non-leash areas can get heated, but – this is vile.
This is truly vile.
The one heartening thing in it is that the dog owners say they know their ‘opponents’ in the usual dog-park fight, and they can’t imagine it could be any of them. They are passing on the opportunity to make their adversaries look bad.
Don’t certain varieties of rock-salt make dogs sick?
Just a less sick alternative as to why people might all have their dogs get sick at the same time from the same place. Doesn’t take too much of a toxin to take out a 5 kg dog. Imagine what just one beer would do to him. It can get certain 50 kg people woozy if they’re not used to it.
I hope so. But I imagine someone would have thought of that already.
I live in the general area and to be honest I’m not sure if this is anything to these aligations.
We have one dead dog and one ill dog and a variety of reported possibly ill dogs and two children who were ill but not sick enough to require medical attention.
(Which makes me suspicious that concerned parents may have jumped to the wrong conclusions)
At first it sounds suspicious but really its a big park and a lot of dogs go through there. All it takes are a few incidents in a short span of time to make something look like either an epidemic or a deliberate act. Adding to that when something like this gets into the news and hints are made that the death was suspicious or possibly deliberate it doesn’t take much for people to panic or mistake symptoms of one thing for another.
If there is some sicko poisining dogs well of course I say they have to pay for that especially if they endanger children as well.
Personaly I’ll wait and see after the autopsey of the first dog and see if there really is anything to this. I really doubt it.
Well, hpoefully this is just unfortunate circumstance but there are some sick fucks out there who will do this sort of thing. I really don’t think I could pray for them.
Back where I grew up (Southeast Missouri, around Wappapello), dog poisoning isn’t an uncommon occurence. I don’t know why they do it, but it happens all the time.
This is the kind of offense that makes me wish they’d bring back some old time legal punishments, like flogging or the stocks. I think it’d be kind of appropriate to leave some asshole in the stocks for a week or so with a sign reading “DOG KILLER” next to him.
I’ve had a dog intentionally poisoned. After 30 years, I still get angry and heartsick when I think about it.
I never had a dog, but I did have a cat. When my cat was going on 9 years old, and wouldn’t leave his own yard, someone put anti-freeze in his yard for him. We fought for his life, and then when we knew the situation was hopeless, we had to put him down.
And I’d still like to do things that are illegal to the person who poisoned that cat. He was just an old fat fluffy thing that sat in his own yard and left everyone alone. I hate people who torture animals.
I wish they had signs - or at least listed phone numbers. Every time the neighbour’s dog won’t shut up, I get a sudden urge to look up DOG KILLER in the yellow pages…
If anyone asks, this is the #2 reason I don’t let my cats roam. (The #1 reason being cars.)
Assuming there are damn fuckers involved in this incident … damn fuckers.
Unfortunately, deliberate poisonings aren’t nearly as uncommon as they ought to be. People put out rodenticides, antifreeze, and all sorts of other stuff that causes nasty, lingering death. They’re one of the most heartbreaking parts of my job, really. By the time these animals are symptomatic, it’s generally too late for us to be able to do anything for them. The animals are heartwrenching, and the owners are even worse. These poor folks are losing their pets out of the blue, through no fault or carelessness of their own, and they’re just devastated. These fuckers, horsewhipping’s too good for them.
Rock salt can make animals sick, and even cause fatal toxicity, but salt poisoning generally doesn’t look like pesticide poisoning. They usually cause pretty different symptoms. If the vet is calling it pesticide poisoning, the odds of it being something like rock salt are pretty low, IMO.
It seems to be pretty clear that it’s a case of deliberate poisoning.
A talking head on the TV said that a sickened dog’s vomit contained part of a weiner into which a blue, granular substance had been introduced. No word yet on the analysis.
Oh, I found a link. (No pun intended.)
Thought I’d provide an update …
Saturday’s Toronto Star reported that yes, it appears that the dogs were intentionally poisoned by an agricultural pesticide that requires a permit for use.
sigh
What do you get for killing dogs, aside from the righteous indignation of the people in this thread?
Fine? Jail? Fingerwagging?
Anyone know?
Cheers.
This was in Canada, but I know in the US you can’t go to jail for hurting animals. You are subject to civil charges and maybe misdemeanor penalties.
The dog named - the KC Spaniel - is worth about $2500. As I understand it, that’s all you are responsible for is the actual worth of the animal.
Depends on the jurisdiction and the nature of the abuse.
I’m not sure what the penalties are for animal cruelty on a criminal level, but on a civil level whoever did this will be responsible for replacement cost of any animal that dies, and will almost certainly be sued for veterinary bills for any other animals who go sick, which isn’t exactly small change.
If these animals had come into our clinic overnight or on the weekend, they’d have been looking at some pretty hefty bills.
(All prices USD)
Exam and ER fee-$65
Chemistry panel–$85
CBC–$35
Electrolytes–$33
IV catheter placement with first bag of fluids–$33
Abdominal radiographs–$91
ICU hospitalization–$67
Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze) test–60
Activated charcoal--.14 per ml, 5ml/lb body weight, 6 times a day–for a 20# Cav, $84
Vitamin K (if we suspected rat poison) injections–$50
Metoclopramide (or other antiemetic) injections–$100
That’s just the stuff I’m certain we’d want to do, and we’re already at $702 for the first day. Depending on the animal’s condition, there are probably other things the vet would want to do, and every additional day an animal is in our hospital, the average bill goes up $200-300. If we’re talking transfusions, that’s more like $500-$700/day. The spaniel who died, they probably did CPR and transfusions, and a lot of other stuff, so I’d say his bill was easily in the four digit range.
Still even if all anyone got was the intial workup, we’re looking at $700 for each of seven dogs, plus replacement costs on that Cav. The vet bills alone would be roughly $5000, plus $2,500 for the dog itself.
