Fuckin SDMB almost cost me my job today..

This thread in Cafe got me in deep shit today.

http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=91678

It is locked now, but the link in that thread took me to a porno site while I was surfing at work. I thought I was safe following links on this board. Guess I was wrong. I have now been banned from using the internet for a minimum of 90 days per company policy. Im a fucking network tech. this is gonna be interesting. People have gotten canned for this shit before.

IMHO surf monitors are a bad thing. When these idiots just see shit like “Phlip went to sexybeeches.com at 2am” they dont think about how it happened. Just that I went to this site. Hell, this thing put up the red flag at http://www.flashers.com . Its a damn flash development site.

Thanks SDMB.

Yeah, that pissed me off too, though I’m in a safer position at my job (I once accidentally opened a full-screen picture of gay porn in front of my boss accidentally), they understand that sometimes a link doesn’t go where it says.

Our work porn-strainer is pretty-um, eclectic?- in its censoring. I got redscreened for clicking on a Bartcop link. My boss get blocked from looking up info on cross-training because the search engine brought up crap on cross-DRESSING.

The drag queens in the office were very offended at that

These goddamn surf monitors are totally non-discriminate. They bust your ass as soon as you hit a bad link. It doesnt even show anything, just a red hand saying “Busted”. How the hell can they bust me for something that I didnt even get to see.

On the other hand, the original poster should have the shit slapped out of him for that post.

Nobody said you have to read this at work. I occasionally read the SD at school, but not very often. I don’t do this at school too often because I don’t think they would like a lot of the stuff here.

After I posted my original message, I realised that some people might only have internet access at work. There goes my idea out the window.

Why would anyone get fired for clicking on a link that they didn’t know was porn?

a) if you didn’t know, it’s not your fault, and any boss should understand that

b) if you aren’t supposed to be surfing “non-work” sites at works, for any reason… well, then that’s your fault. Sorry, but that’s the hard reality of it.

The porn may have made it more obvious that you were surfing the non-work site, but you were just delaying the inevitability that your boss is going to find out you aren’t doing what you’re supposed to be anyway.

BP

Damn… I have to apologize here too, now.

Phlip, I’m truly sorry about having posted that link. As I said in that very same thread, I had no idea that the link would create some porn pop-ups until it was too late. I now hang my head in shame.

Sorry. :frowning:

Did you consider telling the network admin, “Yo, dude(esse); I was on the internet searching for (insert legitimate search target) and clicked a link which turned out to be a porn site. I immediately logged off. Could you verify for me that I’m not listed as hanging out in The Porn Shack for the last 12 hours?”

At least it didn’t take over your homepage.

Would this work, highlight a link before you click and read what it says on the bottom? I’ve been suckered in by a couple ones here but they were all in good fun, so far.

But on the plus side I think we’ve all learned a good lesson from Zaphod’s mistake. Leave a site before you link to it. I know I’ll be more careful next time I link to an off-site/

The OP made a post a mere three minutes after posting the link warning of the porn pop-ups. Given the real-time nature of this MB, there wasn’t much more he could do. He made a mistake, took the best actions available to him to correct it and apologized. Sounds sufficient to me.

And this fucking bugs me, too.

as does this,

If you want a site where all posts are moderated, go goddamn find one you worthless peestain. How you assume we are responsible for your actions is beyond me.

Fuck you.

Damn, I had missed that comment.

As UncleBeer pointed out, it was an error, and one I tried to fix as quickly as I could. I also apologized there, and in this thread. I know that doesn’t change your situation at all, but there is little more I can do.

I could throw more apologies your way, but that’d be futile. Besides, that little quote above is not making me want to apologize to you. You want to slap the shit out of me? Well, I’ll be back in North America in less than one month. If you can wait that long, I’m sure we can arrange something. Feel free to e-mail me for my coordinates. Don’t miss with that slap of yours, though, because after that, it’ll be my turn.

Have a nice day.

I’m suprised you got kicked off for accidentally clicking on one site. I would think some screeners make a distinction between clicking on a porn site for a second, and spending the whole day on porn.

Porn sites are notorious for buying up expired non-porn domain names and putting pron on the URL.

Zaphod, I was harsh on you. I am not going to slap you. You didnt know you were fuckin up.

Uncle Beer, you suck. If you dipshit mods would have wandered your asses over there sometime during the wee morning hours of the post, the link wouldnt have sat active for 7 hours. I think 7 hours is plenty of time for a mod to notice a thread stating Britney Spears death. Dont you? Or maybe you were too busy getting your daily fill of goat porn to notice.

I like this board because it is moderated rather well. Most of the mods are rather intelligent. BUT, there are also fuck stains like you who are here just to be “in control” of something other than your TV remote.

I happened to stumble on that link right after it was originally started, so I didnt get to see the warnings, but dont act like you fuckers were doing your job letting that sit there for 7 hours. If the board isnt going to be moderated, then get rid of the mods. Sounds reasonable eh?

You, and only you, are responsible for your actions. It is not the moderators’ fault that you clicked on the link.

Methinks you’re being a jerk.

Yow! and here we go folks! I thought this was a surf monitor bitchfest and all of the sudden it turned into mod bashing.

Golly, never seen that happen before.

Yeah! First thing we do, let’s kill all the mods.

The board would be a lot better without The Man keeping us down, deleting sock puppets and trolls, uh, moving threads to the right fora, er, fixing coding mistakes in posts… um…

Stick it to the man! Ban all the mods!

Yo, Phlip, this is the Internet. Here there be tygers. Take responsiblity for your own actions, you wuss. And UncleBeer, IMHO, does a fine job of modding. You should only have to endure the crap he does FOR FREE!

Now now, jarbaby. Obviously Phlip’s job requires him to keep tabs on the latest Britney Spears data. And here the careless saps at the SDMB tricked him into clicking on porn in the pursuit of that noble duty.

Come on, Phlip. It’s sour grapes and you know it. Two honest mistakes were amde, and together they backfired – as it just so happens, on you. Suck it up and take your lumps.

PS: Actually, you should count yourself lucky. I bet a lot of folks wish they could get paid to sit and surf the net all day.
