Godammit!
God damn it.
I used to love playing computer solitare. It was a great way to relax and still keep my brain on simmer. Anyway, a few days ago I started playing FreeCell (the other comes-with-the-computer card game), and now I can’t enjoy solitare because I don’t find it engaging enough!
Fucking siren of a card game, god damn you FreeCell! AAAGGHH!

Well, if it’s only been a few days, you probably aren’t in too deep. You probably haven’t yet decided to begin at game 1 and work your way up, hoping win them all and to get to the last game number before you die a horrible, lonely, slumped-over-the-mouse death.
By the way, I learned Freecell with actual playing cards (except it was called Seahaven Towers). Be thankful you’re not shifting all those cards around by hand.
And when you get bored of Freecell (and you will), go find a copy of Win98 Plus, and start playing Mircosoft’s version of Spider. Ever since I learned to play Spider well, I’ve found Freecell to be too freaking easy to win on the first try to play anymore.
Computer solitaire is definitely a “gateway game,” leading to more and more difficult gameplay. Anyone got any suggestions on a ‘harder’ solitaire game now that I find Spider to be dull? I’m jonesing.
If you are easily hooked on solitaire games, do not, I mean really do not go to this web site.
Otherwise… Hey! There’s a couple hundred games; you can play double-deck or single; choose backgrounds; track statistics, obsess over winning every game of Forty Thieves… Go! Now!
I had to eventually delete the MS games off my computer. I was way too addicted… At one point I did some searching and found a fan site that had lots of detailed Freecell analysis. They had an army of FS players divide up every one of the games and try to beat them. If someone had problems with a game, they passed it on to another person. Eventually they found one that was unsolvable. By the way, try game -1 or -2…
Dave, Spider is fantastic. We’ve got it on all the computers at work, and I play four suites often (I don’t beat it a lot, however).
I’m over FreeCell. I was a serious addict for many moons…oh, let’s face it, I’m still an addict, always will be.
My real monkey is TriPeaks. I had it on my computer at work, up to $40,000. Unfortunately, I left that computer behind when I left the job. So now I’m slowly building it up at home - only a few thousand dollars, but I’ll get it back up to my previous levels.
And Minesweeper. 8 seconds on the basic, 42 seconds on intermediate, 200 seconds on expert. Yeah, I’m slower on that one.
I used to play way too much minesweeper in university. Best times: 2 seconds for basic (I got lucky - one click, and the whole board cleared except for one block), 15 seconds for intermediate, and I honestly can’t remember how long for expert.
Freecell is Satan’s plaything. It wouldn’t be so bad except for the fact that it records how many times you lose. So now every time I “accidentally” open it, I have to finish and win, or else I will hate myself for intentionally throwing the game.
Oh, thank GOD I’m not the only one. My other evil, evil passion since FreeCell got a little too easy? Tai Pei. I use the ‘castle’ layout, and can waste HOURS on it.
Now I just need to totally forget about this thread so I don’t get suckered into clicking on one of those links.
All but one, Penny. Games Magazine did a feature article on the computer Free Cell game and divulged which one of the layouts isn’t winnable. Sadly, I can’t find my copy of that issue!
I have a great solitaire program called Solitaire City. Included is the hardest solitaire variation I have ever tried: Demon. I have yet to even come close to figuring it out.
The only thing keeping me from a truly great score in Minesweeper is the fact that my mouse hand gets twitchy if I really try to go fast. I overshoot my target and kill Mr. Smiley every time.
