Okay, I’m an avid watcher of every talk, daytime, show I love them all, but mostly I watch Dr. Phil.
Anyway, they were talking about a young, suburbanite, rich, well treated, spoiled rich bitch.
and her problem was being a spoiled rich bitch, she was smokin pot, fucking boys, drinking stealoing and being an all around child, all at the age of 13.
Her mom decided she was addicted to pot*and sent her to rehab, yadda yadda yadda.
When asked why she smoked pot she replied, “IT HELPS ME ESCAPE MY LIFE< AND I FORGET ABOUT IT ALL”
WHY FOR THE MOTHERFUCKING LOVE OF CHRIST WHY???
WHAT OIS SHE TRYING TO ESCAPE??? ALGEBRA? THE FACT THAT JOEY DUMPED PACEY ON DAWSONS FUCKING CREEK??? THE BRITNEY SPEAR JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE SCANDAL???
I WAS THE SAME PERSON AT HER AGE MINUS ONE BIG POINT,
I WASNT A WHORE<I DIDNT SMOKE DRINK OR STEAL, AND LIFE RULED.
Am I being close-minded hear, or do these kids need a sharp swat on the ass and some soap in there mouth?
Gee. Well. Maybe they’re trying to escape the fact that thier life is dominated by meaningless pop cuture crap?
Maybe because if you’re right and the stuff above is what they know of life (becasue it was what they were given)…well if i didn’rt know there was more to life than what a lot of 13 year old are pesented with, i wouldn’t be smoking pot I’d be look to kill myself.
(Now, be honest. Read that above quote and tell me you wouldn’t want to escape from it?)
I think P.J. O’Rourke had a pretty good take on the whole idea.
Drugs are fun for kids. Kids are healthy enough that they can abuse the hell out of their bodies and not really have to pay much in the way of dues. Furthermore, drugs are wonderful for escaping from teenage weltschmerz.
Grownups can’t do drugs as recklessly as kids do. For one thing, we’re over eighteen, and therefore liable for a hell of a lot more than a few months in some boot camp somewhere. And our problems are LOTS more complex. Drugs can make you feel better, sure, but is there one that will get me out of debt?
I was a severly depressed little kid. I’d look forward to recess so I could find someplace to cry where I wouldn’t be seen (breaking into tears during class sucks). I am now an equally depressed adult. Whatever is out of whack with my brain chemistry was equally out of whack when I was thirteen.
Added to that is that kids have very little control over their own lives. They cannot choose to change schools, move away, avoid their family or whatever you’d do to cope with a bad situation as an adult. They don’t even get to choose what they wear for the day. And people in situations where they have no efficacy and no power to change their circumstances have it pretty hard, and may indeed seek other ways to escape.
Plus, as you’ve illustrated, nobody takes you or your problems seriously.
And this is assumeing there isn’t abuse or sex abuse involved. Imagine being hurt by the people who are supposed to care of you, and not having the resources and knowledge to get out of the situation.
They really are that trashy. I knew some folks that went on the show. It was an episode about kids that wanted their parents to get a divorce, and let me assure you that it was very real.
You are spot on here, kids today DO need a boot in the ass, most of them. Todays “It’s all about me” society and the cancerous PC BULLSHIT forced on parenting has done a fine job of creating arrested development adolescent jerks like the one you saw on TV, even when the parents have all the tools and the good intentions to do otherwise, they fail.
People need to get a grip on this shit, because it doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
Or any worse, on the basis that when I was 13 there were still kids smoking dope, brewing mushy tea, or trying their hardest to get high/drunk/whatever.
You see, that’s what we need. More bobbies on the beat, teaching young’uns how to be well behaved by giving a quick clout round the ear for any tomfoolery.
