There’s never been two weekends of no football in between the AFC/NFC championships (or before that, the AFL/NFL title games) and the Super Bowl.
The norm has been one weekend off in between: that is, the Super Bowl would be played two weeks after the conference championships.
On several occasions, there’s only been a week in between (no weekend off). It has generally made for a livelier game: according to a radio commentator this morning, the average margin of victory in Super Bowls without an extra week was 9 points; in the others, it was 17.
It just seems that one team or the other usually gets emotionally flat in between games, with the extra week. This, IMHO, is especially true when the Super Bowl team was perhaps not the most talented team in its conference, but got hot at the right time.
What’s the big deal about that? I’ve seen them win three Super Bowls. Neener, neener!
