Funniest single panel cartoon

Midvale School For The Gifted.

This is good.

So many great Far Sides to choose from…I’ll go with this one for the moment. But the problem with thinking of a favorite Far Side is that every time you start thinking about it, suddenly you think of another, and another…

Unfortunately, I can’t find an image link to another of my favorites, the pre-Far Side cartoon in which Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion are at the door of Dr. Frankenstein’s castle, and he tells them, “Sorry, I just used up my last heart and brain…try the wizard down the road.”

Cow Tools.

'Nuff said.

I can’t find an image to it that’s not a coffee mug, but I’m certain most of you will know what I mean when you read:

“I’ll tell you what this means, Norm. No size restrictions and screw the limit!”

Definitely from the Lampoon.

My favorite Kilban was “The Victim’s Family,” though I’m sure there are few who remember it. This is also a great one.

But Addams’s “Death Ray Fiddlesticks” is my favorite overall.

The “Then a miracle occurs” cartoon originally appeared in American Scientist in 1977, which outdates the South Park “Underwear Gnomes” by a couple of decades.

Two of my four favorites (still looking for the other two):

Far Side: Professor Waxman

Gahan Wilson: EAT

My 2nd favorite Charles Addmas cartoon.

This is my own favorite

Beware of Dog?

2nd-ed.

My absolute favorite Far Side cartoon:

This is the one that has been on my classroom wall for years:

“Farmer Brown froze…”

As has this one.

There was one in National Lampoon many years ago. A guy with a fat bloated veiny face is sitting at a table in a restaurant and the waiter says “Frankly, for you sir, I wouldn’t recommend ANY kind of wine.”

I’ll have to see if I can find a link later when I’m not on my phone.

Dispoz-a-Dime

Another Far Side

Bizarro was an obvious Far Side knockoff, but it had its moments. One of my favorites (which of course I can’t find) had two people sitting in a car at an intersection. The driver is looking to the left, and the passenger is looking to the right at an 18-wheeler barrelling down towards them. The passenger says “Clear on my side.” The caption is (something like) “Why you shouldn’t drive with a suicidal person.”

This is my favorite too. On the face of it, it’s not that funny, but I can’t help but to almost cry laughing everytime I see it.

Me too. I think it’s the tense, anticipatory posture of Doug that really makes it. For a man with no art training who often referred to his cartoons as doodles, Gary Larson’s drawing had an amazing amount of expression and life to them.
