Sign on the DC beltway:
Report Suspicious Activity
My bad. I couldn’t tell from what you wrote. I will admit that it took me a second to see it.
This one I have actually seen, it is a carwash, named after the little hamlet where it is to be found, not far from Big Bear Lake in the San Bernadino mountains of California.
Not far from where I grew up in England, there used to be a large sign, by a major road, pointing the way to a “Secret Government Research Centre.” My google-fu has failed to find me photo of it, though.
Two of my favorites from years ago in the SF Bay area:
A Street
Downtown
Caution Pedestrians
Slippery When Wet
This one in Kent, England appeals to me.
In the US, the signs that always amused me were the ones outside businesses that read along the lines of “Jesus is risen, indeed He is risen! Full auto tuneup $70”
I don’t have a picture, but my favorite is on a freeway (I-5? Maybe I-205?) approaching Portland, OR from the south. It highlights an exit to
Boring
Oregon City
Yep, no argument here.
Roddy
Whenever I see a street sign that says
SLOW
CHILDREN
I always think “Those poor kids. They must go to a special school.”
And when I see Perkin’s School for the Blind, I have to wonder who the sign is for.
I think it was in a book by National Lampoon that I saw one of my favorites. This was a large neon sign with some of the letters burned out, that said:
UCKY
FRIED
ICK
I drive by a farm on my way to work that has a sign that says:
ALPACA EGGS
I don’t know what an alpaca egg is, but I sure want one.
Reminds me of one I saw years ago on a local motel:
There’s also this sign at the western end of U.S. Highway 50, near Sacramento, California.
I pass this one on a fairly regular basis.
When I was in college I has some friends get arrested there, doing what so many other people before them had probably been arrested for, recreating* their bongs.
*hmm, I’ve never seen that typed. It’s not supposed to be re-creating, it’s rec-reating.
ETA, I see I was beaten to it.
Here’s another one. Driving somewhere in the south, I remember seeing either this or this one.
In Yucaipa, CA, just off of the Yucaipa Ave. exit off of I-10, on signs that are side by side:
“Teriyaki Smoothies”
Ulp.
At an autobody shop that I passed, one of the letters fell off their sign and took them months to fix. It said:
SMOG CHECK
ASS OR DON’T PAY!
Driving to my Grandparents house in NC Arkansas, there were three family favorites:
<1> The water tower for Bourbon, MO.
<2> The signs in Oklahoma that warned Do not drive into smoke
<3> The one in their town, just before the Strawberry River, that warned Road Unsafe When Under Water
A gas station in our town used to have the following words emblazoned on its side, a little too close for comfort:
CHICKEN DONUTS DELI
Even though it’s changed owner/franchise and been remodeled and rebadged, I still call it “the chicken donuts place.”
We have a state prison here in Tucson along Interstate 10. There are signs in the area similar to those warning that there is a prison nearby and advising drivers against picking up hitchhikers. Those signs are in dead earnest and probably more common than you might think.
Ow. I have a cough and when I laugh it starts me coughing. It was worth it, though.
My favourite was around the corner from my first student flat. It said ‘CHANGE OF PRIORITY AHEAD’. Every time we walked home late and drunk, we considered stealing it and sticking it up on the wall of our flat.
A local bar here had lettering on the door that said, in arced red letters (like a frown) “No Minors”.Below that it said again,in arced red letters(like a smile) “after 9:00 PM”.Problem was in between the two arcs was a straight line in blue letters that said"NO WEAPONS ALLOWED".
So it looked like it said No weapons allowed after 9pm.
There’s a matching sign on the bridge heading out of Ocean City, MD.
That second one’s on Highway 69 near Stringtown, OK. There’s a maximum security prison visible from the highway there, so it really makes perfect sense. Doesn’t say much for their security, though.
Also down the road is the now closed “69 Cafe”, which was all kinds of hilarious to High School me.
