So why are they nice to you but give me the shaft?
I see that a Region 2 release is scheduled for release in April 2008.
Piracy is bad. However, do they really expect people to wait 4 months when it’s a click or two away? They could have at least set up an online download service like Direct2Drive.
(As an aside, what the hell is going on with Direct2Drive UK? £15 for Deux Ex GOTY on .co.uk compared to $10 for the same thing on .com? And it’s not listed as an North America only download either. Insane.)
And we have a weiner!
I kept writing him, but he has very few responses.
I also invited him to gmail.
Somehow I would expect an electronic communication from Bender to include the phrase “Bite my shiny metal ASCII.”
I thought that in addition to the 4 episodes cut from this movie, and the classic ones, there were 13 original episodes planned for 2008.
There are 12 episodes scheduled for 2008- four each from the four movies.
I think your math needs some work.
A comedy movie picking up in the last 1/4? You win the optimist of the year award.
WTF. My “exclusive bonus disc” is just a clear plastic spacer
HA!!! Burn!!
How deliciously ironic!
According to the commentary it’s a formula used for correcting a sundial with an extra element (the doom field) added on.
Yeah, maybe 16 makes more sense. I never kept up on my math after flunking that physics of wonton burrito rolls class.
My copy shipped today, & arrives December 5th.

Well just watched it, and desperately wanted to like it, but alas the gags were few and far between, so ultimately thumbs-down alas. On top of that, I am a little POed that
There’s a cliffhanger ending.
I guess I’m the voice of, er, non-dissent, as I liked it! Maybe everyone’s expectations were too high? I completely forgot about it until pretty much right before I watched it. It felt just like a typical Futurama, but longer.
Well I saw it through the less than legal channels, but never fear, I’ve got it coming in the mail. How did you guys get yours early?
But I loved it. I’ll speak in generalities here because I think that’s all I need to do. I am a HUGE futurama fan, so I can’t really hate any new content that they create. The thing that had me the most sad though was that it doesn’t have guaranteed life after these DVDs. The positive thing, I think, is that it is a cartoon, which is a hell of a lot easier to resurrect when it comes to getting cast members together due to fact that everyone can record stuff when they want. So that’s promising that even if, in say another 4 years, it could probably still come back if they don’t do more stuff now.
But yeah, after finishing the movie, I was sad, because I liked the older, simpler futurama episodes. It is much more suited to a season-type format in my opinion. Maybe Comedy Central can pick it up? I guess the main reason why I like the whole episodic content thing is that most episodes of futurama were self-contained thought experiments. This movie is four episodes, but they are strongly connected. Some of the best parts in the old Futurama would be considered too insignificant for the new movie format. Would the neutral planet have made it? That was really the best shit in that one episode! And David X Cohen said in the comments for that episode that he kept saying “More Neutral Humor!”
The gag content does seem lower, but maybe next movie we’ll find out more.
Now some spoilers!
Really, I didn’t get he Lars thing until much later. I didn’t have to wait until he burned his hair! But I did realize after I saw old Fry.
One thing I really loved was how they filled in a lot of blanks with the year 2000 past. Now in the current history, Fry is with his dog the entire time (No need to cry at that episode anymore!) and he is with his family a lot, although he is sad about other stuff with Leela and leelu, etc.
Wish I had seen more Zapp though. “I am the man with no name…Zapp Brannigan!”
I enjoyed it. They really did throw in everything but the kitchen sink, didn’t they? I must say, though, that the bit where President Nixon’s head got scammed was telegraphed badly. The Barbados Slim bit was overdone as well.
The Lars matter was well done, I thought. At first I thought I knew, but along the way, they had me convinced that I was wrong, and in the end, what I thought originally turned out to be true. That takes some skillful writing.
One thing that disappoints me - Fry’s temporary return to the 21st century kind of dulls the emotional impact of “Jurassic Bark” and “Luck of the Fryrish” for me. That’s a real shame, as those are two episodes that really set Futurama apart from other sitcoms.
I didn’t get it early. I bought mine at 12:05 am Tuesday morning and then watched it.
It took me about five seconds to work it out. Enter Lars, he talks, I say to myself “Why is Billy West doing that voice so close to Fry’s? Oh, he’s Fry in a time paradox.”
I think the problem is that instead of a lot of actual humor they just went with a lot of pop culture references. In this case Futurama references but it’s still just showing something from the show and essentially saying “Remember __________? Wasn’t that funny?!”
I found it to be pretty average myself. I didn’t hate it or find it to be a betrayal of all that is good about Futurama but at the same time I thought the writing lacked the same zip. I can’t think of one really great line of dialog from the entire film. You know, the kind of dialog that is beaten to death by nerds trying to be funny by proxy like Futurama had before.
