I just watched my first episode of this show.
I just watched the episode where Tommy and Janet drive upstate to Katy’s boarding school.
This show is freakin’ hilarious!
So… Does anyone else watch it?

Get your NetFlix fired up and start from the beginning- it’s imperative.
Best show in the last 10 years, for sure. Leary is vastly under-rated.
I love Rescue Me. It’s perfectly acted and written. One of the must watch things on TV IMO.
Loved when they crashed out into the corridor.
I have often wondered why it doesn’t receive regular raves on the Dope. I watched a rented DVD of the first series, just because Denis Leary was in it, and have been downloading it ever since (it doesn’t show in Australia).
I think it is the best mix of comedy and drama that I have ever seen. On one level it is terribly gritty but the little ensemble comedy bits (which often seem adlibbed) are just laugh out loud funny. The kitchen riffs with the ridiculous conversations are gold.
I would go back to the start and get the whole Gavin history.
Fantastic writing and terrific ensemble acting.
I started with it, then drifted away when I missed part of season 2. I recently went back and rewatched everything from the start, and I agree that it’s some of the better TV out there.
My ex-GF loves this show, and I’ve seen the first 3 seasons, and part of the 4th.
The characters are engaging, the comedy is good… but the whole thing is filled with the stupidest, most evil, self-absorbed, unrealistic people I can prolly imagine. In any given situation, most of the characters will do what most viewers know to be the wrong thing, usually with little to no repurcussions. Assault, arson, murder, adultery, child abandonment, theft, drug addiction, lies… all have virtually no detrimental effect to the perpetrators.
And I know that if I was the guy paying the writers I’d do the same thing, but (come on!) it’s just not possible for so many women to find Tommy Gavin physically irresistable. He’s a 50 year old alcoholic ffs.
Entertaining? Yes, I enjoyed parts of the shows that I watched. Would I watch any of it again? Not on purpose. For me, watching the show can be summed up best by something I read years ago from some punk rocker/metalhead guy (as best I can remember it):
What can I say? He’s hot and I’d do him in a NY minute. Possible season one spoiler below-
When he and his cousin’s wife finally get down to it on the dining room table, and he’s standing there in that black shirt, tearing the buttons instead of undoing them, saying “Is this what you wanted?” and there are equal measures of lust and danger, I was hard-pressed not to scream “Oh hell yes!” at my TV.
There’s just something about the guy.
If you want to see what paved the way for Rescue Me, then rent The Job- basically Tommy Gavin as a cop, with many of the supporting players from Rescue Me. It’s frigging hilarious and I have no idea how it stayed on the air for as long as it did.
I thought the first two seasons or so were “meh”, but once Tommy stopped drinking and doing everything in the world he could to ruin everyone’s lives, I thought it was “okay”. I mostly watch and watched it because I wanted something to watch and it was watchable.
It doesn’t have a story, the characters are mostly stupid, and I’ll be darned if it’s meant to be a comedy and not a soap opera, but it’s alright.
I’m another Doper who loves this show…thought the last two episodes were especially great, funny and serious all at the same time. Sometimes I want to punch Tommy in the face, but I think that’s the point. Thank God there’s Lou to relate to on this show.
Loved The Job too…definitely a classic nipped in its infancy.
This thread doesn’t get enough hits to warrant another thread for the latest episode, so I’ll tack on here.
This whole seeing dead people is wild. I really hated that he took the heat for *whatshisname. I was kind of hoping Gavin would kick his ass after that “you’re an old fireman” speech.
*I’m still learning the characters’ names.
I usually try and start threads, but they normally get less than ten replies, so I’ve stopped. I’ve been watching since Season 1. Love it.
This is one of those shows where the main character is the least interesting. It’s the supporting cast that keeps it going for me.
Frankly the whole “I see dead people” bit is tiresome.
That scene with Sheila and Tommy last night was hot. I love it when women talk to me like that.
And I agree about everyone in that show being horrible people but they do get their just desserts. Everyone in that show leads a miserable life. Even Tommy, with all his hot women banging, never has a moment of peace.
I watched it until his sister-in-law burned down the house he was inside. She was too over-the-top to be believable at that point. Maybe I should give it another shot from where I left off, whichever season that was.
And yes, the sex scenes were teh hawt!
