Game Help! Lego Star Wars (PS2)

I know this is supposed to be a kids’ game, but it’s just the right speed for this n00b gamer who came of age with Pong and Space Invaders.

So, I’ve got a pretty good handle on things, but one part of the game is driving me absolutely nuts. I’m trying to get the last canister for Episode I, Part I “Negotiations.” It’s the one behind the force field in the room where you “force” the droid fighter and it flies through to the other room.

The only way to get it - from all the guides I’ve read - is to pull down the grate at the top of the room, then get Jar Jar to jump from the platform below that into the space the grate was covering up, near the ceiling. The angle is tricky, because both of the platforms below the space are a bit to each side of the space, so you can’t just jump straight up. I’ve been trying to jump from a bit of an angle, but it can’t possibly be this hard. I have tried every possible angle. I have pressed the “X” button twice, three times, any combination I can think of. I have spent at least an hour (cumulatively) trying to jump into that space every which way and it just won’t happen. I’m beginning to think there’s a bug in my game. There are a couple of other somewhat tricky jumps in the game but I’ve always been able to nail them after a couple of tries. None of the online guides I can find say anything aboout this part being tricky.

Has anyone else had this experience, or any ideas on how to get through it? Can any other characters get into that space? Maybe my Jar Jar has problems (kinda figures, doesn’t it?). I’ve found in a few cases in this game, you need to aim slightly off where you think you need to go to hit it. Has anyone found that you need to have non-intuitive aim to hit the jump?

Also, if there’s something wrong with my game, is there anything I can do about that? Go to the company, maybe? If this is truly a glitch (and not an aiming problem) then it seems I should get a replacement or something…

Any advice would be much appreciated!

kthx!

Generally speaking, you won’t have a bug in just one copy of a game. The code doesn’t change between copies, and if there’s a problem with the media (scratched disc or whatnot) then it won’t make the game function differently, it’ll just make the game crash. Or not load at all. Eidos will replace your disc for a small fee if it’s damaged, but in this case, giving you a new disc won’t make it any easier to hit that jump.

I know just the jump you mean, btw, and it is a bitch. There’s no secret trick to it beyond what you’ve got from the online games, it’s just a matter of hitting it just right. You might be able to do it with Boba Fett, but I never tried it myself, so I can’t say for sure.

Thank you, at least I don’t feel so alone in the world. While it’s embarassing that I apparently have piss-poor aim, it’s good to know that at least one other person had similar trouble. I guess I’ll keep trying.

If anyone else has any tips I’d be glad to hear them…

Yeah, I’ve finished SWL a couple of times and that one jump is one of the hardest things in the game. It’s a matter of persistence and good aim.

If I remember correctly, General Grievous jumps pretty high, and he’s larger so it might be easer to get using him.

I think there’s another way – is it possible to sit on top of the fighter as it goes through to the other room?

Got out my copy and I’m in that room. Use Jar-Jar (he double jumps the highest) and jump to the platform to the left of the opening (it’s higher). Now because of the lip that protrudes from the opening, do not jump directly at the opening from any angle. Instead do a double jump with a slight pause in the middle (x,pause,x). Make the first part of the jump out into the room directly in front of the opening, with the second part of the jump turn Jar-Jar 90[sup]0[/sup] towards the opening. In he goes.

If you have trouble changing direction in the middle of jumps, just practice in the middle of the room. Go forward, jump and then turn sideways, backwards or whatever with the second part of the jump. Also as a general game tip - if your secondary character is a force user, they will sometimes use the force to activate things while you’re standing on them. Like in this room - have Jar-Jar (or whoever) stand on the cart that’s in front of the force field. If the other character is a force user they will move the cart while you’re on it. This won’t help you get into the grate opening - just a general tip.

I feel like I tried that (that, and a hundred other combinations), but I am not so great at the combo jumps, so it’s quite likely I just didn’t have the right touch. I will give a more focused try next time want to play that particular section again.

I did eventually manage to snag the canister without Jar-Jar. I saved up enough studs and bought Gen. Grievous. He went right into the opening after only a couple of tries. So thanks for the suggestion, c_goat! I know that Jar-Jar supposedly jumps the highest (I love the humor of that game in that he is the most useful character), but Grievious seems easier to control, for some reason.

The other part that was really driving me bats was in the Episode III: Ruin of the Jedi (? I think?) section, in the Jedi Library where you have to force-pull the platforms out and jump on them, then force-pull the next platform before the one you’re standing on retracts. I would pull one out and couldn’t land my jumps in time to pull out the next one. Sometimes my guy would go right through the platform instead of landing on it. After a billion tries I finally managed to get the timing right & finish the level. Geez.

So anyway, thanks for the help!
