Game of Thrones 3.06 "The Climb" 5/5/2013 No Spoilers

So when it is finally winter south of the wall will it be summer north of the wall?

Stannis was the head of the NSA who helped capture Bin Laden.

Stannis strangles religious fanatics while screaming, “Where’s your God now?”

If Stannis posted on the SDMB he would raise you to Moderator for making an excellent Harry Potter joke but he would also cut off the tips of your typing fingers for posting spoilers in the no spoiler thread.

I’m all  wondering how I missed the bird. It’s Ygritte.

I guess that’s one way to know who’s read the books – those odd names are spelled correctly.

How would she be playing him for a fool? I suppose she’d gain some points with Mance if Jon admitted to her that he lied about the number of men at Castle Black, but we haven’t seen her prying info out of him. I’ll take her at face value.

Actually, he cannot do that until he wins the war. He’s the Burger Pretender currently, and only the Burger King can do that. Big spoiler!

Everybody in Westeros ties themselves in knots with lying and plotting and hedging their bets.

Jon Snow could be leading them into an ambush, he could change his mind and screw up the whole plan, they could get captured even if he is honest about his loyalties. Whichever way, if things go badly for the wildlings, Ygritte (that’s close, right?) is much better off if Lord Snow thinks she’s into him. If things go well, then he’s on Mance’s good side and she may as well get a good grip on him beforehand.

Dude’s got rockstar hair and is apparently good in the sack, but he’s no Podric. I’m not buying the “Jon Snow, Seducer of Wild Women” bit just yet. However, I am willing to eat a large and bony hat if I’m proven wrong.

But there is something enticing about a big, strong man, handsome and able to kick serious ass, who at the same time is a shy virgin. Ygritte has clearly enjoyed toying with him ever since he failed to cut her head off. She might enjoy having a hot man who doesn’t pursue her, but who she gets to pursue. And it’s fun seeing him blush.

Aaand now I’m feeling like I’m starting to disclose too much about myself here. I’ll refrain from sharing my . . . thoughts . . . about Captain America.

Actually, where are Jon Snow’s loyalties? Is he “deep undercover” among the wildings? Or did he defect? (I’m not fishing for spoilers, but want to know based on the TV series.)

I think people saying this are missing what they’re trying to convey. She’s not so googly over Jon Snow that she can’t think straight. She’s just a simple “north of the wall” sort of girl. She found a good man, and is trying to take care of him, in her own fashion. That’s all that’s important to her.

She mentions that she had a former lover and did something unpleasant to his junk because he didn’t treat her well, and I certainly got the impression that she’d do the same thing to Jon Snow if he started mistreating her similarly.

I like that in this world of alliances, betrayals, and back room deals she represents the simplicity of life north of the wall. She likes Jon so she took him. She doesn’t care who his father is. I don’t think it’s any more complicated than that. If either one of them died tomorrow, I think they would equally mourn.

It’s an interesting question. Qhorin did set up his own death to allow Jon a reason for ‘defecting’ and made the point to him a ‘single brother with the wildlings will be worth a thousand against them’. And the reason Jon gave to Mance for defecting, i.e. "i want to be on the side that fights for right’, didn’t seem convincing to me. But Ygritte has obviously made him question and then break his vows. Which is interesting because Jon asked Mormont if he knew about Craster giving his sons to the White Walkers last season and Mormont did, so Jon may perhaps becoming disillusioned with honor and duty.

But if he didn’t break his vows Igritte would have no reason not to tell on him because she would know he wasn’t really interested in her.

You think that’s important? He also wrote the Declaration of Independence!

He’s a Night’s Watchman who is officially undercover with the wildlings. It doesn’t mean that he’s not gaining sympathy for their position, and not being tempted by their lifestyle. He did some things against the NW’s code, but I would liken it to an undercover cop who is allowed to say, do drugs even though they are illegal, because to refuse would be telling.

It was some guy who she got some crampons from. I got the the impression that she fucked him so hard that he got bruised, and so he gave them but I can see from a second watch that it’s pretty ambiguous. Jon snickers, which makes me think maybe you’re right.

I suppose you’d also get the impression that she would do that if he betrayed her because she also said that she’d “cut your pretty cock off right off and wear it around me neck”?

I get the impression Ygritte is more grit than grime, more bark than bite. I think she’s a softie at heart. She wouldn’t have threatened to cut off his cock if she didn’t care about him.

Where can I find a girl that’ll threaten to cut my cock off? sigh

We don’t know how long magic has been “sprouting up everywhere”. It could have been for years. I get the impression that Melisandre, Dany, the Undying of Qarth, Jojen, Orell, and Jaqen H’ghar didn’t just wake up a few months ago and say “holy shit! look what I can do!”

I get the impression that magic is slowly returning to the land, bringing dragons, white walkers, the long-ass winter and the slow emergence of powers in people like Bran and others.

This may come as a shock to you, but sometimes women fall in love with guys who just “show up”. I mean they’re both 19 for Christ’s sake. And as I mentioned, Jon’s a refreshing change from the smelly Wildling meatheads she usually hangs out with.

Magic seems to be much more commonplace across the narrow sea, where Dany is hanging out. In Westeros, it’s all about science - they have the maesters who are supposed to be very knowledgeable. In Westeros it seems like anything vaguely magical has been gone for so long most people now assume its legend - but stuff is happening.

But most of the magic users so far have been from distant lands. Jaqen H’ghar, Melisandre, Thoros of Myr, the warlocks in Qarth etc. The only native magic seems to be whatever power Bran has, the ‘warg’ beyond the wall, and Jojen. But it’s the kind of magic that’s so passive, most who have it probably think they’re just dreaming - unless explicitly told they have some power - which is how Bran has found out he’s ‘special’.

Also, it seems that a lot of magic relies on king’s blood. Khal Drogo dies and we get dragons. Stannis Baratheon had something to do with the shadow baby. Fire and blood and all that. I wonder if there’s some connection between the Targarians and the red priests.

A crush, I understand but she was in love-lust from the get go. As strong as Sansa’s love was for Joffrey and now Loras, as strong as Tyrian’s lust was for his whore(s), as strong as Littlefinger longs for Cat… those infatuations pale (imo) to quickness and severity of what Ygritte has shown for Snow thus far - if you take her love at face value.

I mean, he’s a crow, had his sword at her throat, shown no interest and at times active disdain to her up until a few days/episodes ago. And her? She’s been gunning for his dick, vouching for his loyalty, and just overall a giant fan of Snow’s uninterrupted.

It’s just a strong attachment is all I’m saying. A bit too much for my sensibilities but then again I’m no wildling/woman/what have you.

You just don’t understand women.

The warlock said that his magic came back when the dragons were born. Not sure if there was another mention.
