Game of Thrones 3.07 "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" 5/12/13 No book spoilers

Didn’t Ygritte imply that she would be with Jon Snow regardless of what side he chooses? I could swear she said something like that in the prior episode. My guess is that she’ll choose Jon Snow and then, like maybe a minute or two later, she’ll be horribly killed…Or he will…Possibly both…

The actor who plays Jon Snow reminds me of a friend of mine who, when he’s got long hair, looks a lot like the actor…I make jokes with my wife about it. So it would probably be a bit sad if he got off’d.

Exactly - he’s too happy. I dunno, I mean, maybe his wife’s baby will be a Lannister or something…OR a demon baby…Maybe she works for the lord of light or something. Maybe the tragic thing will be a child that turned out like Stannis’.

Perhaps I’m just very cynical about the characters on the show. I feel like Sansa’s character is a reflection of all the main characters: Good life - Doom - shot at happiness - marrying Tyrion - will probably end up being sold to little finger.

Is there anyone in the realm who has just had a ‘happy existence’? Does the light shine on anyone there for long?

Don’t get me wrong - I thoroughly enjoy it.

I do think it means that Theon is now missing his man bits, even though the entire time I was thinking ‘this has got to be a dream…right?’

I’m kind of curious as to how he’s still alive, to be honest.
As a side note - what happened to ‘Sting’? Does Ayra still have it?

Worst Mafia nickname ever. (Works slightly better as a jazz name.)

I’m getting tired of these scenes with men wearing clothes while naked women prance about.
[/QUOTE]

Right!? The scene in the cave was a prime example- Onya practically has Larry Flynt directing her and camera’s snapping for a minute while Jon’s nudity last two frames as he jumps in a natural hot tub. The amount of full she-frontal of v. he-frontal (or even he-nudity in general) is alarmingly sexist.

(Sting- I remembered it had a name but couldn’t remember what it was, and I know it isn’t technically a sword either- rapier maybe? Anyway…)

It was stolen from her when she and the others who were going to The Wall were captured. Presumably it’s in the hands of one of the soldiers who captured them or whoever got it after him. The sword she carries is one of the swords that Gendry took from Harrenhal.

Her sword was called Needle. Sting belongs to Bilbo Baggins. It was lost when she was on her way to the wall before winding up with the Brotherhood I believe. I don’t remember exactly who took it.

Polliver, one of the Lannister men that captured her and brought her to Harrenhall, still had it last we saw. She’s on his list of people to kill.

Haha…um…whups…

I kind of thought it was important. Still, if he’s on the ‘to kill’ list, I’m guessing she gets it back.

Well, it’s not like Theon’s balls have any consequence. He’s just been a dick with them so far (pun intended, natch)

Not according to Arya, anyway. He does seem the hopeful lunk. As for his helmet, its meaning is/was that it’s purdy, that’s it AFAIK.

Indeed. And I’ll admit, I did find it a little sad that Joffrey was sitting there, all alone in that big room. Must be depressing. Fuck him and anybody looks like him and all, but still…

Weeeell I’m torn on this issue. On the one hand, fantasy laws would dictate she follow Her One True Man. On the other hand, having known women like her in my life, I’d vouch Ygritte gonna do what Ygritte gonna do, and ain’t nobody can tell what *that *is.

I think it was Littlefinger who said “Our peasants have provisions for five years, anything beyond that and… well, we’ll have fewer peasants”. So presumably the frost reaches all the way South and/or the fertile ground to the South can’t feed the whole kingdom.

Well, the book series is called “A Song of Ice and Fire”…

How anybody’s going to remember all the lyrics I’ve no idea.

It seems implausible that they have 5 years worth of food supplies for the winter when they were having food riots in the middle of summer until the Tyrells started shipping in food. Unless they’re deliberately starving their people, it doesn’t seem like they have enough food for this week, let alone 5 years of winter. In general, no one seems to be taking winter all that seriously except of course the Starks.

I visited the site and found the “Inside the episodes” videos pretty interesting (the two writers comment on two or three scenes of each episode). For instance (I put that into a spoiler in case some people wouldn’t want to read it, but it’s not spoiling anything. It’s about their perception of Danaerys) :

In their comment about two different episodes (the first one and sack of Astrapor) they say that Danaerys has a measure of ruthlessness and even cruelty in her, despite being otherwise compassionate. Also, answering a question asked in this thread, they believe that Danaerys emphasizes with slaves as a result of her own experience, as a poster had stated previously.

That does bring up… what the hell is Snow’s plan at this point? At this point it has to basically be- run away with Ygritte and live anonymously or somehome try to broker peace between the Wildlings and the Northmen.

However, Littlefinger does refer to a number of years, and I believe it’s in fact something like five years (I could be misremembering).

In any case, everybody knows that winters last for years. Except children (referred to as “children of the summer”) everybody lived through several winters. They might not take this one seriously enough, and might not take the Nightwatch seriously at all, but they do know that they’re long and harsh. The beginning of the winter is officially announced in one episode (a white raven is sent), and the issue discussed in the small council.

Large cities are a different beast altogether. Even today, with refrigeration, über wealth, petroleum-fueled supply lines and all that a city like Paris or New York only has about a week’s worth of food buffer, tops. And speaking of Paris, it was a rather unremarkable bread shortage during peacetime that sparked the French Revolution.

Now, granted, there was a bit of fuckery on top of that, notably the King mandating that his (foreign) mercenaries get fed first before distributing the surplus bread into the capital and so on ; but the point stands : cities are supremely food dependant, and never self-sufficient. Large cities, even fortified ones expecting sieges, can only get fed that far in advance. One expects the five year surplus to be stocked in thousands of granaries dotting the landscape and ready to get delivered as needed.

Of course, whether Earthian wheat would keep so long… I have no idea, akshully.

It’s possible that the food is stored in public granaries with a DO NOT OPEN EXCEPT FOR WINTER instruction.

Credit where it’s due, there was beer spillage.

That’s very possible, but seems like an unusually high amount of self restraint for a royal family that was being mugged in the street by hungry people.

Who is Onya?

No. She said something to the effect that they’ll have to stick together from now on (“it’s me and you, now, about you and me”, something like that) since neither Mance Ryder nor the Nightwatch cared if either of them would live or die. She rather seemed to imply that they shouldn’t care anymore about “sides”.

Sorry for monopolizing the thread. I’ve a bad case of series withdrawal.

Winter started? I totally missed that. I thought winter was still coming.

Osha, sorry. (I wonder if she was conceived while her mother was laid off due to a workplace accident.)
