Game of Thrones 3.07 "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" 5/12/13 No book spoilers

Not Trant, but yes he did.

Not sure if it was Meryn, but to be fair, Tyrion antagonized the kingsguard (for example, the scene where he saves Sansa in the throne room, he tells Bronn to kill Meryn if he speaks again) and no one really respects him. On the other hand, people respect and fear Tywin. Killing Tyrion is probably something that kingsguard wanted to do, whereas the prospect of killing Tywin is scary.

I’m not sure if Joffrey is to the point, yet, where he would call a hit out on his grandfather. He did on his uncle, but that was after getting directly slapped and called an idiot in front of a group of people. All Tywin has done is act somewhat intimidating and cold towards Joffrey. In addition, Tywin is far more important to the war effort than Tyrion.

But I could see Joffrey’s new fiancee trying to plant the seed in his mind. The Tyrells would gain a lot from weakening the Lannisters. With Tywin out of the way, there’s nothing stopping Sansa from being wed to Loras.

I actually don’t think Tywin is in any (immediate) danger but if it happens, that’s how I see it going down.

I got into a full on argument with the people I watch GOT with over this. I think he’s in denial, and not just about this. I think he’s severely underestimated the entire situation at King’s Landing. I think that his line to Cersei, that she isn’t as smart as she thinks she is, applies just as much to Tywin himself, and was intentionally meant to be an ironic foreshadowing because he’s screwing up.

He thinks he knows so much about the dragons- he’s wrong. He thinks he can bring Joffrey to heel- it won’t be that easy. He thinks he’s outsmarted and bested the Tyrells- he hasn’t. I think this whole thing is going to blow up in his face.

But back to the incest thing, I think that on some deep-down level, he might know it’s true, but he’s in deep denial about it, and he’s refusing to accept what happened and what it means.

We have a saying/famous movie quote in France : “Les cons, ça ose tout, c’est même à ça qu’on les reconnaît”. Approximate translation : dumbasses will dare anything, that’s what makes them dumbasses. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know if he’s in denial, or if he’s just enough of a practitioner of realpolitik to know that he has to always be certain to deny it in public with great vigor… not that it really matters one way or the other.

Exactly, killing Ned Stark was a total dumbass move. War with the Starks has been tough on the Lannisters, they’ve been getting their asses kicked left and right. I’ll bet if Tywin had been in Kings Landing he would have tried to countermand the order. Joffrey has been thinking and acting like a kid, he likely would not understand that without his family army, his head would soon be on a pike, king or not.

I recall a conversation from Season 1 between Cersei and Joffrey. I think it was when Robert was still alive. Cersei was explaining to Joffrey why he needed to be nice to Sansa, but he could fuck whomever he wanted when he was king. Joffrey offered some kind of plan of forming a royal army, so he wouldn’t have to depend on his vassals for military power. Since then I don’t think we’ve seen much in the way of strategic thinking from him.

I just found out that Rob Stark is dating the new Doctor Who companion, Jenna Louise-Coleman. I’m not sure why anyone needs this information, but there ya go.

he would be too smart for that. can’t spend the gold if your head isn’t long from your shoulders.

Yeah, that’s one of the show’s more interesting scenes. I’m fine with Joffrey being a bad king, even a total dick, but it would be nice if he had a little more depth than just picking the wings off flies. Trying to implement bad but plausible ideas might be interesting.

Well, that’s why i thought he was in the right in this episode. Dany and her dragons are a serious concern and something the king should be worried about, and informed off certainly.

They’re a serious concern, and definitely something that should be on the radar. But Tywin was right to brush them off, though not for the reason he gave (the last dragons seen in the realm were tiny). There are simply much more pressing concerns right now than some toasted bint who may or may not have dragons and is currently months away, at best.

Right except the fact that Ser Jorah has not returned to Westeros after being pardoned and has stopped sending reports should set off some alarm bells. Even in a time of war they can send spies and/or Assassins to keep an eye on her movements and have another go at offing her.

The rate of growth of her dragons alone would surely make Tywin take notice if he knew it.

A plausible explanation could be that he was discovered and executed. Or he could simply be on his way back to Westeros.

Anyway, at this point, I don’t think a spy is needed to have a rough idea of what is going on. The whole other continent seems to be aware that she has dragons, she’s leading an army of 8 000 super-soldiers, has torched a city and intends to torch another one. Asking any ship captain who has crossed the narrow sea recently should do the trick.

My other favorites:

“Excuse me while go Master my Coin.”
“That bear is huge! Almost 2 inches taller than Brienne.”
“OH GOD WHY DID I CLICK THAT.”
“Actuallly, if you finish before about 2:37, it’s pretty hot.”

and pretty much all of Ygritte abusing Jon Snow.

We don’t know that Tywin is not concerned about Dany, I think no matter what Joffrey would bring up, Tywin would have said " don’t bother your vapid head with any of it, it is not a concern for X Y Or Z reasons" he doesn’t want Joffrey making any decisions on anything or getting any confidence he can make a decision in case he starts to make more, the one to kill Ned did not exactly end well for anyone.
I think Tywin finished the exchange with " we will be sure to keep you informed… If we think we need to" or something like that.

Hold on - the last I knew he was still riding around with Dany and Barristan.

Yes, but intelligence over distance being as difficult as it is ( even with ravens ), we can’t be certain Tywin knows this. Which I think was clairobscur’s point.

How did Barristan Selmy find them so easily? He wasn’t a small council member, so presumably had limited access to info they had. As a member of the kingsguard, he was sworn off titles and women but maybe not money? Or access to his ancestral fortunes maybe?

Just seems odd that he goes from “Hey you’re fired” “Screw you guys, here’s my sword” to showing up thousands of miles away at the exact correct time and place.
