Game of Thrones 5.01 "The Wars to Come" 4/12/15 [Show discussion]

Everything Cersei has done, such as sending her daughter away, has been with the witch’s prophecy in mind.

I was disappointed that the writers chose not to introduce the kingdom of South Centros this week.

You had to have seen the SNL skit on Saturday.

To me it seems obvious Melisandre is hoping to bone Jon Snow. I mean, why would she ask if he was a virgin and seem pleased he isn’t. Maybe we’ll be treated with another shadowbaby.

Remember it was Tyrion who sent Myrcella to Dorne, not Cersei. Cersei was pissed about it as well.

He said that Robert was a disaster, and they saw the Targaryen name (Viserys) as the most viable option. Perhaps Illyrio oversold Viserys’ suitability to lead.

Liked this episode a lot. Creepy funeral-eyes on Tywin - brrrr! Surprised Jaime didn’t try, even half-heartedly, to deny freeing Tyrion. Tyrion looks good with a beard. The young Aerie lordling really was pathetic during sword-and-shield practice. Odd that the dragons would breathe fire but not actually crisp Dany. Is Jon going to tell an angry Stannis, “I know you meant to burn Mance, and you did, but you never said he had to die from burning”?

Darn tootin’. This is HBO, after all.

I thought she actually looked rather haggard in her close-up while in bed. Not shown to her best advantage.

He’s definitely discrete; I think she wants him to be discreet.

Yes! Great opening scene with the fortuneteller.

Yes, but is it Margaery? Dany? Sansa? Someone else…?

Cersei didn’t do that; as **ISiddiqui **notes, Tyrion (while Hand) did, over her angry objection.

Huh, I never thought of Daenerys as the younger and more beautiful queen who replaces Cersei. Danerys really needs to get her queen on though before that can happen. Who worries about fighting pits when you’ve got a kingdom to conquer?

Young Cersei really did look like a combination of Joffrey and older Cersei.

This was really disappointing.

I thought that was a call-back to the leeches she used on Gendry; wasn’t he a virgin? She needed king’s blood to do that magic, and it seems like his virginity made it more powerful, or something. So maybe she senses king’s blood in Jon Snow as well.

Except that Cersei had FOUR children. Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella, who we’ve seen, and her first child, a son who died while still a baby, who she talked to Catelyn about way back in the pilot episode. Unless she just made that up for some reason.
Overall an enjoyable setup episode, with some great scenes, my favorite being young lord Robin trying to learn to swing a sword. The only plotline I’m not at all interested in is whether Grey Wurm and Missandei have a romance or not. Snooze. All the other stuff we saw was interesting. So who is MIA so far?

-Bran/Hodor/Meera
-Arya
-Roose/Ramsey/Theon
-Qyburn and his experiments on The Mountain
-Yara and the other Iron Islanders
-Rickon/Osha/Shaggydog

Didn’t we last see Gendry in a rowboat, a couple of seasons ago?

“Swings his sword like a little girl with Palsy.”

I about peed when he said that.
As far as MIA, do we think The Hound is really dead? Might he lick his wounds (and compound leg fracture), and somehow manage to survive? That last scene between Arya and him was sad, painful and tragic, but no one’s dead, until we see them good and dead.
ETA: Also, can someone remind me what was up with the Daario storyline? I completely forget anything about him.

I have a little girl with palsy and she can swing much better than that.

No, that was covered because the witch basically told her that she and Robert wouldn’t have children together. If you don’t survive infancy, you don’t really count. The infant mortality rate has got to be insane during those times. Say it’s comparable to our 1400’s or 1500’s.

Heh, now I want to see a duel between Robin and Samwell Tarly.

Fire doesn’t touch the Mother of Dragons. She doesn’t burn. Ever. They can eat her for lunch, but they can’t burn her.

She’s put on a few pounds. It makes her face look different.

All younger and prettier …

I’d like to see Samwell just shove that brat out the damn Moon Door.

That baby named after Samwell could deliver a smackdown on Robin.

The realist in me couldn’t help thinking how the fetters around the dragon’s necks didn’t choke them as they grew to such massive proportions.

But hey, MAGIC!
