Game of Thrones 5.04 "The Sons of the Harpy" 5/3/15 [Show Discussion]

Unless he’s the son of Rhygaer Targaryan and Lyanna Stark, in which case he would have probably been killed had that been known after/during the war. Secrecy would have saved Jon in that case. Targaryan blood was not a good thing to have at that point.

Really? So far we have had:
-Arya arrive in Braavos, get admitted to the creepy death cult, start to learn their ways, re-meet Jaqen, and hide Needle in an act of rebellion
-Sansa get engaged to Ramsey Bolton and plot many schemes. Also got to see Robin fight like a girl
-Brienne and Pod encounter Sansa, are pursuing her
-John Snow has been elected lord commander of the night’s watch, had a bunch of arguments with Stannis, and killed Mance Rayder
-Winterfell, which we hadn’t seen for ages, is now being descended on simultaneously by bunches of different characters, which seems pretty awesome
-Tyrion made it to Volantis, ended up in the house of someone we haven’t seen since season 1, then headed off on a wagon trip, and got kidnapped by a character from previously-unrelated-storylines
-Tommen and Margaery have gotten married and sexy hilarity has ensued
-Cersei is (presumably overmatched) in a struggle for influence with Margaery, and has met an interesting new character, made him the new high septon, and introduced an army of fanatics
-Jaime and Bronn are having an awesome roadtrip to a brand new place that we haven’t seen much of yet, and totally killed some guys
-Dany is having all sorts of issues governing her city, chopped off a guys head, and now two of her most trusted advisers may be dead, having just engaged in some serious asskicking

And I know I’m leaving some stuff out. How much more COULD have happened so far?

Yeah, it seems to me like plenty is going on.

That was nice scene. You noticed Stannis didn’t immediately hug her back, though. It wouldn’t do to make him too warm and fuzzy.

Putting aside the Unsullied’s poor fighting skillz for a moment… why didn’t any of Ser Loras’s fencing buddies defend him against the Faith Militant mooks when they grabbed him? They were standing right there with swords.

Yep, and that was a great list. However, as much as I like the Brienne and Pod characters, their storyline so far goes nowhere.

If Jon is Robert’s son, why did Ned keep that from Robert? If he is Rhaegar’s son, why does he look so different? Do we know who killed Lyanna or how her son could have been smuggled to Ned?
Maybe Jon is Robert’s son and Ned hid him from Robert so the Lannister’s would not kill him, but why would the Lannister’s want him dead since he is so much older than Cersei’s kids? Bastards have no claim on the throne.

You win the thread, Sir.

I think bastards complicate things. If you are a new dynasty based on alliances you probably want to make things as uncomplicated as possible. And Roose Bolton got a royal decree making Ramsey an official heir. I’m sure the king could do the same for himself if he wanted for some reason.

I like the Rhaegar/Lyanna parentage theory myself, but such a big deal is made of Robert’s kids having dark hair (like Jon’s) and the Targaryen(sp)'s all having white-blonde hair…it seems a longshot.

Could Jon come from an even older lineage? Like pre-Targaryen kings of Westeros?

The pre-Targaryen kings of Westeros were the Stark, the Barratheons, the Martells, the Lannisters, etc.

Dragons could eat everyone.

Ned had brown hair, and so did his brother Benjen, it seems reasonable that their sister might have been a brunette as well.

Ned very poignantly tells Jon “You might not have my name, but you have my blood.”

I suppose that evidence could implicate Benjen as Jon’s parent as much as Lyanna. Brown hair, Stark blood, and members of the Night’s Watch aren’t supposed to be fathering sons, which would give Ned a reason to lie about Jon’s parentage. The Night’s Watch does seem to be pretty pragmatically lenient on the “No Fucking,” policy though.

I don’t think Jon is Robert’s because if he was why is the big cover up necessary? Robert had lots of bastards, it was a worst kept secret than Loras Tyrell’s sexuality.

When your best friend has murderous rage towards all Targaryens and your sister just popped one out you definitely want to keep it on the DL. We’ve only seen Targaryens that were the result of Targaryen on Targaryen marriage (Dany and Viserys), there is no reason one with northern blood couldn’t look like Jon. His wolf looks plenty Targaryenish.

*Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come."

No wife, no children… but nothing about “no fucking”. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well they didn’t exactly have the pill back then.

The ancients did have methods of contraception. Not as reliable as ours but still. I imagine there’s something on the world of Ice and Fire that’s reasonably reliable, something that Cersei, at least, could get her hands on.

True, and there are varieties of fucking that can’t possibly result in pregnancy. Some of them don’t even involve women.

That’s why Ygritte took him to the hot spring.

I didn’t do too well on the quiz either–like Jaime, I would’ve expected Tarth to have more giant blonde women running around the shores.

Game of Thrones Facebook Recap, Season 5, Episode 4.

(Incidentally, Bran Stark “likes” a few entries and I have no idea why. Anybody got a clue? Or are they just having him randomly show up to “like” things since he’s off the show this season?)

No idea what’s going on with that.

? I didn’t notice anything about Bran. But there was a chunk of the recap that was duplicated.

The entry he liked was about Jaime wanting to die in the arms of the woman he loves. Which is Cersei. Which is the act that got Bran tossed from a tower in season 1. Seems more of a dislike than a like, but I’m fairly sure that’s all there is to it.
