Game of Thrones 5.06 "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" 5/17/15

If Tommen were to snuff it, would the crown fall to Myrcella (she of the Dornish boyfriend)? Or can only men inherit the Iron Throne?

And what of the raucous “wed them and bed them” customs of Westeros, as described in the pre-carnage Red Wedding chatting, when the wedding guests drunkenly undress the newlyweds and throw them in bed together? We didn’t see that in Ramsay and Sansa’s nuptials.

We’ve never been given a complete rundown of hereditary rules. But Daenarys certainly thinks she can inherit.

Perhaps people are more raucous when they’re in a good mood and not surrounded by banners depicting a flayed man. Just because it might be the usual custom in Westeros doesn’t mean everyone does it all the time.

Sansa was married before the Old Gods. Ramsay didn’t do the bit with putting his cloak on her either. I got the impression that those customs are different, and do not include the “Wed them and bed them” thing common in marriage in the new religion.

Also, he’s a character in Game of Thrones so he’s pretty much doomed.

Does anyone else get a slight Steerpike vibe from Littlefinger?

Loved the littlefinger moment with Lancel…

It’s also worth pointing out that Cersei, in her great wisdom, managed to get the one person who knows about Robert being poisoned into a position of power.

I finally put my finger on why Sansa’s scene bothered me so much.
One of the reasons I like GoT so much is that anything might happen. First example was the decapitation of Ned in season 1. By disregarding the “boring invincible hero” cliché, it showed that if characters mess up or even get unlucky, anything could happen to them. Which adds a lot of unpredictability and fun to a show.

However, something predictable has come in its place ; the wheel of villains. A villain (say, Joffrey) does several horrible things, and is shown to be completely irredeemable. Often, beloved characters are made to suffer just to show how evil they are. And by the time this villain gets dispatched, several others have already taken their place to continue the cycle.

Ramsay is simply Joffrey 2.0. A spoiled, sociopathic, irredeemable sadist.

So now we’re back from fresh, exiting writing to formulaic tripe. What happened to Sansa has less to do with any kind of plot, and is just to kick someone we like to continue the villain cycle.
The strings are showing.

Seems like Cersei has gone off the deep end empowering the Faith Militants, if they see themselves as above royalty she’s undermining her own authority which derives from her influence on her son. Imagine if Joffrey were still king, High Sparrow’s head would be decorating the Red Keep in record time. You can tell the Kingsguard are used to Joffrey’s rule when they go for their swords and wait on Tommen for the command.

Anyone else finding Arya’s stuff a bit slow?

Aside from any scene involving Gilly, which are invariably a complete waste, the Dorne climax was the worst scene this show has ever had. The entire plot line was awful. “Bronn and Jamie road trip” sounded fun and had a lot potential, but there was only about 4 minutes of it filmed and half of that was badly choreographed fight scenes.

The Sand Snakes were awful and pathetic. They speechified with awful dialogue, they were totally not credible as threats/badasses, they tried and failed pretty hard at that characterization. Obara apparently preceeds every line of dialogue with “I am the daughter of Oberyn Martell. He took to me to court and taught me to fight. Please pass the salt, grandma”

The grand master plan Jaime and Bronn had to conduct this significant kidnapping was to stroll into the Prince’s guardian, unchecked, and then whisper to a confused Myrcella from the bushes. And just by sheer coincidence, they arrived at the exact same moment as the teenage mutant ninja sand snakes.

So we were treated to an awfully choreographed fight where some characters who didn’t look like they could rob a little old lady somehow took on master killer Bronn. It looked like the fight scene of a high school musical.

Oh, and Bronn, easily one of the best characters in the show, is going to die from that abortion, giving him a totally unworthy death scene. “Oh for fooks sake” indeed.

It’s our own fault, you can’t have a favourite character in GoT, it’s a death sentence.

I get the feeling that Tommen is also struggling to NOT be like Jeoffrey. He had that bastard as an older brother for a long time. I think he wants to avoid becoming like Jeoffrey at all costs, and he’s over-correcting a bit.

Robert wasn’t poisoned, just repeatedly plied with alcohol while on a dangerous boar hunt, wasn’t he?

Nope.

As shown here on HBO’s Game of Thrones website, next episode is scheduled for May 24th.

H

This isn’t entirely clear in my mind but I seem to recall something like Lancel switching his wine to one that was stronger than he usually had while hunting.

What were they lying about when they said Jorah was a badass? Wasn’t that all true?

I’m not sure if the tournament stuff (that he beat Jaime) was true, or that songs are sung about Ser Jorah’s exploits in battle, but he has been portrayed so far as a highly skilled warrior. I thought the show missed out on a chance at a sword fight by having the main slave-monger ‘test’ Jorah against one of his own men (or another slave). Maybe that’s still to come.

I’m to print that on a t-shirt.

I doubt he’s over correcting. He’s not cruel but beyond that he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to be doing. I just think no one has ever taught him anything about being a king. Tywin didn’t live long enough to train him and Cersei just wants to manipulate him.

That was roughly my understanding. Not poison, but Lansel at the behest of Cersei screwed with the wine in such a way as to slow down Robert enough for a typical hunt to turn fatal. When they were talking at the beginning of the season, I assumed that was the big sin he was suggesting she should ask the gods’ forgiveness for.

Now that he seems to be tight with the high sparrow dude, he might decide to share that little bit of info. I figure he probably gets an indulgence or something for dedicating his life to the order.
