That’s the kind of thing Martin is praised for: subverting cliched expectations. It would be a step backward to have Syrio survive.
One thing I didn’t understand is why Syrio didn’t pick up a real sword after he dispatched four of the King’s Guard guys.
I actually think that supports the belief that he survived the fight. He was so good, and so confident, that even with a broken wooden sword he was confident he could at least disable Trant and skedaddle.
