Game of Thrones 6.02 "Home" 5/1/16 [Show discussion]

I see what you did there.

Man, I wish I could say that was intentional. Alas… Still, funny observation!

We’re not that far apart then. While in a certain sense “anything can happen,” in a narrative sense certain characters are much less likely to be eliminated than others, and that doesn’t necessarily correlate with how big a role they have played to date.

I just thought that Jon had too many unresolved connections to be eliminated at that point. In any event, it’s a bit moot arguing it since he actually did turn out to be unkillable (at least for time being).

On the other hand, just because a character can be eliminated doesn’t mean they will. Stannis’s story reached a logical conclusion, so he could go. But since we didn’t actually see his death, he could turn up again (but I doubt that very much).

I rather like that.

But another observation: Mace Tyrell is also in Braavos, and is Master of Ships for the crown. He is I think still unaware of Margaerys and Loras’s arrest. He may not be as stupid as he pretends to be. The Lannisters also owe the Tyrells a ton of money, and have effectively broken their alliance. Tyrion has mentioned the Tyrells to Dani as a potential ally. What will Mace do if he finds out about Margaerys arrest?

What *is *the relationship between the Faceless Men and the Bank of Braavos? Are they allies or competitors?

I don’t think we have seen any relationship between them to date.

Arya has been instructed by Jaqen to kill an insurance seller, but it’s apparently because he’s crooked rather than they have anything against financial traders.

Haven’t they accepted contracts from the Bank? In any event, Arya could just desert and go with Tyrion. But maybe she’ll just be a hired gun for the Bank, with motives of her own deeply hidden away.

I don’t recall that being mentioned.

I suspect that a girl does not desert from the Faceless Men.

They could throw her out. But yeah, you probably don’t leave a death cult by just saying “ta-ta.”

The Lannisters broke their alliance with the Tyrells?

For all intents and purposes when Cersei finagled having the Sparrows imprison Margaery and Loras.

It may not be formally dissolved but Olenna has threatened Cersei in no uncertain terms with withdrawing Tyrell support if her grandchildren are not released.

Of course, Cersei doesn’t have a lot of leverage with the Sparrows at this point.

Also Tywin had arranged for Cersei to marry Loras, and Cersei tossed that over as soon as Tywin’s corpse was cold. (Probably nowhere near as important as Tommen/Margery from the Martell POV though.)

I think that too.

Whatever his mother tells him to do.

Don’t forget Cersei had the gall to act like Loras getting arrested was an insult against her honour because they were betrothed.

Probably. Can ravens fly across the Narrow Sea?

Considering her own imprisonment, that gives her a hell of a lot of plausible deniability.

Plus, Margaery is the queen. Kind of hard to break that alliance when you’d be betraying your own family, no?

Olenna was the one who engineered that, with the help of Baelish, after Margaery was imprisoned. Olenna has made it clear she knows exactly what was going on, despite Cersei’s transparent denials.

I’m not sure what you mean here.

We already did, for many fans, with
Syrio Forel.

I know, I know…
We won’t really know about that one until the end, will we? And some speculate that character I mentioned could have been involved in the finale of the Sopranos.

The thing is, he doesn’t have any real unfinished business, unlike say The Hound or Benjen. That makes his return somewhat less likely.

FWIW, here’s a list of 61 significant characters who have died, or appeared to die, in the first five seasons, together with the odds of coming back. The vast majority are villains, side characters, unconfirmed, or have actually come back already. There’s not a lot of major good guys who have died.

No, if you add several constraints like that you’re not going to see many instances. But there doesn’t appear to be a pattern of good guys being less likely to die so far:
(question mark if it’s debatable whether they are major characters, or whether they are good/bad/inbetween)

Good: Ned Stark, Renly Baratheon?, Joer Mormont, Robb Stark, Catelyn Stark, Oberyn Martell?, Jojen, Ser Barristan? (5 + 3?)

Bad: Viserys Targaryen, Craster?, Joffrey Baratheon, Tywin Lannister, Locke?, Meryn Trant? (3 + 3?)

Inbetween/unknown: Robert Baratheon, Khal Drogo, Lysa Arryn, Ygritte, The Hound, Shae?, Mance Rayder?, Stannis Barathon (6 + 2?)
