Game of Thrones 6.03 "Oathbreaker" 5/8/2016 [Show discussion]

Why? Lancel’s father is Kevan Lannister, who is still alive.

His mother’s only mention was in Season 1, where King Robert referred to her as a “dumb whore with a fat arse.”

Besides, as we’ve discussed, the succession goes through the Baratheons, not the Lannisters.

Well in the chaos of a succession crisis, a faction could definitely trying propping him up as a rightful heir.

Also, maybe I’m mis-remembering something, but wasn’t Robert a distant Targaryan cousin? I thought part of him legitimizing him claim to the throne, was that with the rest of them all dead or exiled, he was next in line.

He’s Kevan’s son, Tywin’s younger brother, and so behind Jaime in the succession. But as has been said, there is no reason that any Lannister could inherit legally.

At least per the TV show, if Tommen is not considered a Baratheon, then the line is extinct. Any succession would require either that a bastard be legitimized or some family related only by marriage taking the throne.

Could be, but if you are going to recognize Targaryan ancestry as being a claim to the throne, then presumably you would have to recognize an actual Targaryan as having precedence. So that would put Dany in line both as an heir to her father and as the next closest relative to Robert.

Since the Sand Snakes have overthrown the Prince of Dorne, any idea how that will play? I would imagine Cersei would want revenge…and did no one notice Trystane’s been murdered too? He was on the same boat with Myrcella and was painting her funeral eye stones. How did the two girls get away?

Yeah, but it’s a long way back to Dorne from King’s Landing. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s in Emilia Clarke’s contract that she won’t do any more nudity.

She has almost no control over the situation. Kevan effectively has command of the royal/Lannister forces, but these have been severely weakened by the wars. The Tyrells aren’t going to help as long as Loras and Margaery are imprisoned.

Ellaria and the Snakes have done everything they could to provoke a war to get revenge on the Lannisters. Even if the Lannisters can’t afford to retaliate for Myrcella, Trystane’s death will be blamed on them and used as a pretext for an attack by Dorne. Dorne has taken no part in the wars and their army is at full strength.

Between Dorne, the Iron Bank, and the Sparrows the Lannisters are royally fucked. But they will no doubt find some way to weasel out of it for at least another season or two.

My wife and I had a longish discussion after last night’s episode and, while I’m sure I am not the millionth or even ten millionth person to point this out, it’s becoming increasingly hopeless that this story has an end in sight, isn’t it?

The story has actually branched out in so many directions now that some are utterly pointless; the Ironborn in particular are both incredibly boring and equally irrelevant. The Danaerys storyline is now broken in two, with no corresponding reduction in storylines; Jon’s departure from the Black Watch (which my wife to her great credit called, pointing out that his contractual obligation was technically met) means we’ll get both a Jon-outside-the-wall story and a Wall story, we’re following Sam again, so on and so forth. I like Arya but she’s also no longer connected with the goings-on in Westeros.

When this all started the sense one got was that the story had three general lines; the War of the X Number of Kings, The Zombie Invasion, and Danaerys Targaryen, and what would end up happening is those three things would eventually collide. That now appears hopelessly far away.

I think everyone knows that, he was just pointing out how fucked up it is. To which I concur.

There are two seasons left to go, so there’s enough time for consolidation. We are seeing some story lines coalesce and others be eliminated, and I have no doubt that will continue this season. Stannis is gone. Maybe the Boltons pretty soon.

There are still three general lines, and they are starting to be drawn together. Dany is finally connected to Westoros with the arrival of Tyrion and Varys. Her latest adventure is probably a way to draw her earlier Dothraki story line back into the plot. Jon’s departure from the Watch isn’t but splitting the story, but drawing the Watch back into it.

I don’t think it’s as fractured as you believe. A lot of these are moving plot pieces around for a specific purpose. For instance, Dany’s fleet was just burned. Do you think it is unrelated that the Ironborn (and their fleet) are making a reappearance? She also needs an army to deal with other cities that are making trouble, and is now hanging around a massive khalasar full of warrios.

Jon has left the Watch, just as his younger brother has reappeared at his ancestral home.

Arya’s training is coming along nicely, freeing her for missions that could bring her back onto the continent. Who knows what familiar faces she might be tasked with killing?

When all the plot lines collide, that essentially signals the end of the show. There is much that is going to happen before then, and there is certainnly a plan for a proper ending. This is not Lost or BSG, being made up as they go.

Horse, barn door.

What does she think she’s hiding today that we didn’t see yesterday?

That’s a silly and demeaning argument. She doesn’t want to do it anymore. It doesn’t matter whether you think it’s of value to her to avoid appearing nude now. Just because a woman has appeared naked before your eyes once doesn’t mean that her choice not to do it again is meaningless.

Only if you’d read the books.

Jesus christ- how dare she have control over her body!

Women, amirite?

Or you have any feel for narrative structure.

Rubbish. She’s an actress, and she got the part of Daenerys in the first place contingent on her willingness to do nudity. Only after she was established in the role and basically irreplaceable did she leverage that fact to renegotiate the terms. Classic bait and switch tactic.

It has nothing to do with being a woman. If the guy who plays Sandor Clegane decided he didn’t like fake blood and getting all sweaty from doing fight scenes anymore around season 3, and they had to somehow write around him not fighting with awkward camera angles where it was conspicuously a double or something, that would be awkward and notable and deserving of criticism too.

You knew what the job entailed when you took it, and if you force them to make the show more awkward because you’ve decided to hold them hostage after you’re irreplacable then you deserve criticism.
