Game of Thrones 6.04 "Book of the Stranger" 5/15/16 [Show discussion]

Yeah, Olenna is smart enough to know not to trust Cersei, but she might be desperate to prevent Margaery’s Walk of Shame. I can understand that, but at the same time, would it be anywhere near as damaging to Margaery as it was to Cersei? I get that it’s certainly a hit to her dignity, but doesn’t the populace mostly like her? For Cersei, it was a kiss of death because most people already hated her and wanted to see her humiliated. I could easily see most people simply staring silently during Margaery’s walk.

Well, yeah, if both Sansa and Jon are available that’s ideal. They would probably follow either alone, though. Sansa gets Jon to agree to participate by saying she’ll go after the Boltons herself if he won’t. But Jon can lead the bannermen in battle, while Sansa (not being Brienne) can’t.

Olenna’s way is not confrontation but deviousness. If she has something up her sleeve it will be to spirit Margaerys and Loras out of the dungeons in advance and then slaughter the Sparrows once they are safe.

This was a great episode. It feels like it was the beginning of the end of the entire saga. Sticking by my prediction that the White Walkers destroy the Wall, overwhelm Castle Black and a part of the North and are defeated by Dany’s dragons.

Thinking that in the South, the Tyrells lose to the Lanisters (unfortunately since I like the Matron of the Tyrells and they are one of the few “Good” families over all) but King’s Landing ends up under Dany’s control via an army of the Unsullied, Dothraki and Darrio’s mercs. Should be fun to watch.

Did I miss something? Is there any indication, other than Cersei’s say-so, that Margaery would ever do this walk? I don’t think she would, and it doesn’t look like the Sparrows are actually close to breaking her (though she seems to be playing them). So Cersei comes in, saying they’re about to have her do this walk (how would she know?) and Olenna walks right into her scheme? Eh.

Was that all the Khals who died in the fire though? If it was, it might make the rest easier to lead. Still not going to go smoothly obviously, but she should still be able to get some accomplished. And maybe more if the dragons come swoop in.

Well Tomnen was going to confess something to her than the High Sparrow told him that he was not supposed to tell anyone, it could be a lie but what else could Tomnen have told her?

My non-spoiler WAG is that they’re trying to play Ramsey but he’s a step or two ahead of them and Osha’s death was clearly not part of their plan. Hopefully there’s a long con.

At this point an arrow to the heart or some other quick death is going to be completely unsatisfying for Ramsey. What would be the best fate? Making him a blind crippled beggar unable to take his own life has some appeal.

He’s not Wimpy really- he’s a fierce soldier on the battlefield. It’s prison that has broken him, which it also did the anything-but-wimpy Cersei.

Removed- double post

I figured it happened off screen, that after Loras being so broken, Margaery said she would do the walk in order to protect him, and Cersei saying that was to let us know.

The Khal (I forget his name) who took Daenerys to Dosh Khaleen had at least two wives, and since the Dosh Khaleen temple is undergoing repairs it would be difficult to leave them there, so I’m wondering if they are going to be new characters. The child bride khaleesi is pretty clearly going to be.

So I know she survived Drogo’s funeral pyre, but I assumed that was a one time deal due to magic stuff and dragons hatching. Have we established that Dany cannot be burned by anything? Not even touching hot metal? Is this new?

The burning Dosh Khaleen somehow reminded me a bit too much of the helicopter hit that took out most of the NYC dons in Godfather 3.

Dany is trying to lead a “modern” state, one that doesn’t tolerate wanton pillaging, wholesale rape or the keeping of slaves. The problem is that these are endemic to the culture and economies of the places she is encountering (and really of the entirety of the time in which she lives. (And then there’s the fact that a truely modern state would have a freely elected leader, and not a monarch, even if she’s a badass.)

Daenerys comfortably handled one of the dragon eggs that had been sitting in hot coals. One of her handmaidens panicked and grabbed it away from her and was immediately burned. As far as we’ve seen, she can’t be harmed by heat in any way.

Eaten alive by his own dogs would be appropriate.

The problem with Margaery confessing is that she then becomes a witness against Loras. And we don’t know if buggery is just punished by a Walk of Shame. It could be a capital crime to the Sparrows.

In another scene, her bath water was really, really hot, but she had no problem with it. I think one of the handmaidens expressed surprise. I think she showed signs of this before the dragon eggs hatched. (I think she received the eggs in one of the first episodes, so I don’t know if she had this ability before she received them.)

She also bathed in scalding water, to the amazement of her handmaidens.

I think in season 1 it was foreshadowed by her getting into a bathtub after being warned that it was too hot and would burn her- she got in and was fine.

It does seem like we’re getting into the endgame with North. The protagonists are nearly all in one place and in one story.
I am curious to see how the story in the south plays into the larger story.

I agree that it’s a bit vague what’s going on, and who is lying to who, if anyone. From what we know, it does seem unlikely that Margaery has confessed and wants to do penance, because if she confesses (to perjury) then she condemns Loras, which as of this very episode she doesn’t seem at all close to doing.

But we also don’t know what secret Tommen told Cersei.

So… I guess we’ll watch and find out? (I wish I was confident that it would all 100% make sense once we learn the truth, but given some of the fairly careless plot twists already this season, I don’t think there’s any guarantee of that.)

Yes, I said a couple of weeks ago that Ramsay, long term, is dogfood.

With all the secrecy around what Tommen told Cersei, I wonder if the High Sparrow lied to Tommen about the walk of shame, knowing it would get back to Cersei. And that it would trigger the nobles to try and act out to stop it? Or perhaps what Tommen told Cersei was completely different from what she told the council, and is part of a bigger plan of hers? It’s really hard to tell. Either way, I don’t see this ending well for the Tyrells.
