Game of Thrones 7.05 "Eastwatch" 8/13/17 [Show Discussion]

That’s really the only thing Cersei is going to see, an advantage. Proving to her there’s an army of the dead coming to attack the north is just going to make her think she still has a chance to beat Dany if she expends her army fighting the dead.

Yeah, this plan seems shonky af, judging by next week’s preview/the season trailer shit goes south and survival takes priority over the mission objective..

The idea isn’t itself a bad one, which is why I suggested that Jon should’ve done a Michonne and taken a harmless wight down to show Dany before his travelled to Dragonstone rather than rely on his word alone, but this idea that Cersei would give two shits about it is just mental.

Convince Cersei? Never. Convince everybody else? Certainly.

She can’t do very much all by her lonesome.

Did we know Thoros and Jorah knew each other? Someone remind me, did we ever see Thoros and Beric before they first showed up with the Brotherhood?

Beric fought in the tournament way back at the start of the series when the Starks first arrived in Kings Landing, but I believe he was portrayed by a different actor. And Ned sends him to arrest Gregor Clegane when the Lannisters start attacking the Riverlands.

Jon wants Dany to take her army north to fight the White Walkers. Dany can’t do this as long as Cersei is fighting her in the south. If Cersei is convinced that the army of the undead is real, she could be persuaded to put the war with Dany on hold. Then Dany and the dragons can be sent to fight the war in the north.
The other alternatives are to 1. go up north without an armistice and let Cersei take back all of the gains Dany has made. 2. Stay and start a siege of Kings Landing which would take months and it might be too late at the end to defeat the whites. 3. Stay and take Kings Landing with her dragons, but using the dragons would cause widespread fire and kill at least tens of thousands of innocent people.
It is unlikely to work but from Jon’s perspective the only shot of stopping the whites is Dany and the dragons so anything that might allow that is worth doing. Also even if the zombie soldier does not convince Cersei it might convince Dany to do option 1 instead of option 2.

They would have fought together during the Greyjoy Rebellion, but I can’t remember any other interaction between the two.

What is the betrayal that Cersei accuses Jaime during their hug? Was it just meeting with Tyrion or negotiating with him? Jaime seemed angry at being accused by someone who was in Kings Landing while he was fighting Dothraki and dragons.

I wonder how many of the Seven realize that all they really need to do is kill one of their party north of the wall and then turn around and drag the body back south and wait for it to reanimate.

As I recall, older Mormont had a special wolf-head hilt made for it, so there’s no reason he would know it’s a Valyrian steel sword until he sees it drawn.
I was disappointed that Arya didn’t encounter Lady Mormont. I’d definitely watch a show about Brienne, Arya and the littlest bear travelling around writing wrongs, with Podrick
as their squire/comic relief.

It seems likely that Thoros and Jorah would have competed against each other in tournaments as well, they’re both known for that in their younger days.

Indeed. Cersei has learned a lot of statecraft. She’s immediately going to realize than an armistice is in her best interest as it buys her time and also Dany is going to be expending her army up north against a powerful enemy that could dramatically reduce her fighting force. No way Cersei doesn’t take that deal.

Excellent point!

Along those lines, does it bother anyone that they aren’t bringing along a cage? With a cart and a horse to pull it?

What the heck is the plan? Somehow they’ll hold on to a living, er, animate wight for an hour or so, him struggling and trying to kill them the whole time, while they scrounge up some wood and tie it up into a cage to hold the wight, then drag it along behind them back to the wall??

  1. Did I miss the bit which inferred Cersei was pregnant? Sure they’ve been shagging recently, but they were in the first episode and since then. Also a bit late in life to be having a baby in a medieval land…

  2. Wall is doing its job just fine. Dead got to wall. Dead stayed there. Why are they worried?

  3. Drogon wants a cracker? Wait was it Drogon? All these dragons look alike…

  4. Is Jon Snow’s story going to last much longer? Wasn’t GRRM all about subverting tropes. His version is pretty much the standard fantasy 101, hidden prince/heir to the throne, similar to hidden savior (frodo) on long trek to salvation… Only thing really subverting it is he and nobody else gets to find this information out…

Another solid episode. It couldn’t compete with last week but not much could. Some thoughts:

I am pretty sure the note was the one Cersei made Sansa write under the implied threat of death back in season one or two. I should have known that Littlefinger would have a new plan. He’s using Arya’s inclination to underestimate Sansa to drive a wedge between them. This will isolate Sansa. With Arya against her and Bran in another world already he hopes this will force her back to him. I’m hoping Arya is more clever than that.

So yeah, between the Dragon petting and Gilly they pretty much confirmed the guess fans had made about Jon.

Holy D&D! I love how we now have a party and quest passed the wall.

So is Sam the Lord of his house if you ignore that he took the black?

The shenanigans about people traveling fast don’t bother me. I would rather keep the story moving as long as it is within reason. Besides they are vague about time anyway. Do we even know how many years have passed since the pilot?

So Cersei is totally lying about being Pregnant right?

Prediction: the Wall comes down in the season finale. Not sure how but it’s happening

ETA: Cersei revealed she was pregnant when she touched her belly in the scene with Jaime (or is she?). The betrayal was Jaime meeting with Tyrion behind her back (although she knew).

So how many houses have been completely destroyed now?
Tyrells
Baratheons
Martells
Freys
Boltons
Does the Tarly daughter take over now?

Samwell does have a son yaknow.

No he doesn’t. Gilly’s baby is not Sam’s biological son, and even if he was, would be a bastard.

For all we know, there are uncles and cousin Tarlys galore. Plus Sam has a sister.

Gendry could be the last Baratheon if some king or queen decides to legitimize him. Might be quite useful in gaining allies in former Baratheon holdings.

It wasn’t inferred, she and Jamie had a whole conversation about it.
