I think making Shae seem truly in love with Tyrion will make his murder of her a much darker act. Unless there is some big reveal in his trial where she makes it clear it was all an act or they have someone else murder Shae (I hope not, the scene where Tyrion kills his father and her is one of my favorites in the book).
Over in the no spoiler thread they are complaining that the torture scenes with Theon are going on too long and that Dany seems to be getting bogged down. They have no idea that if they don’t show Theon being tortured, that actor has nothing to do for the next couple of seasons and Dany bogged down? They have no idea.
Who cares if an actor is given something to do? If viewers are bored with five or six episodes showing Theon being tortured, griping about it is understandable.
Well, I get the Theon complaints. The producers have a dilemma. Theon is MIA for a whole book, which is two seasons. That’s fine for a book, but for TV it’s risky to have Alfie Allen go unused for two years. Audiences may not have any clue who he is when he finally returns, or worse, what if Allen is no longer available? Plus, the payoff in the book is that you get to meet Reek and slowly come to realize that it’s Theon and all the horrible things that implies. The doesn’t work on TV.
So you have to show him getting tortured, but after a couple segments of it, it just isn’t terribly compelling. They tried to shake it up with two women. We may get the scene of him escaping with a woman and getting hunted down, but they’ve really gone to that well already with the initial escape with Ramsey. So where do they go from here? My guess is we won’t see him much for the next three episodes, other than the Ramsey reveal.
Next season, they’re going to have to start with Ramsey and Reek and fill in some more missing pieces.
Next seaon is the second half of the third book so if they follow the books, Reek doesn’t appear until the season after next (at the soonest).
Believe me, I get the complaints about the Theon scenes, I just think its funny that the people who are watching the series have no idea how long this is going to drag on. To quote Frylock, it’s goddamn adorable.
This seems to be the prevailing assumption, but since they seem to be featuring the Red Wedding in Ep 9 and then with one episode still to go, they will have covered 2/3rds of the 3rd book. Surely, they won’t stretch 1/3rd of a book to a whole season. More likely, book 3 will have been covered by sometime mid-way next season, and then, I think, books 4 and 5 will be combined and mixed up thereon. Season 6 should be book 6 and the final season book 7. That’s my guess since one of the producers is saying the show will last 7 seasons.
Melisandre tries to sacrifice Edric storm - which is now most likely going to be Gendry. Davos saves him. Balon Greyjoy dies. Joffery dies - which I imagine they’re going to put in the next season. Tommen becomes king. Jaime and Brienne reach Kings Landing. There’s Tyrion’s trial, the introduction of the Martells. Tyrion kills Tywin. Jaime sends Brienne off with that sword. And there’s the wildling attack on the Wall, which could easily fill an entire episode, like the battle of Blackwater. Stannis saves the day at the Wall.
They might go into Feast and Dance a little bit, but I wouldn’t imagine they’d need to much. I guess the only trouble is Daenarys and Arya will have nothing to do for the next season. It will be more of a Tyrion/Stannis show.
I think the producer said it will last 7 seasons because GRRM won’t finish Winds of Winter in time.
I was hoping tonight’s episode would be a back-and-forth between Tyrion and Edmure’s wedding and end with the bloody shivaree, but apparently not. How can they drag their feet on getting to the Red Wedding for so long? The groom’s party is already on its way.
I was going to say that, too. Everything’s coming up roses for Petyr.
I, too, am tired of the torture-Theon scenes. Why not film all of the actor’s scenes now for the next couple of years, and put them on the shelf? Then, if he’s unavailable when Reek is front and center in the natural flow of the series, they could recast the role - and even explain the difference in appearance as due to his face being mutilated.
I fully expect some of affc and adwd to be mixed in next year but to still end on tyrion’s escape in ep. 9 and lysa’s death in ep. 10. Depending on how much they mix in I’d guess that books 4 and 5 woukd end in season 5 or early 6.
I’m rereading the books and Catelyn and Robb just arrived at the Twins. I had to stop reading. I don’t know if I can read that again. I’m going to be a mess next week.
I have the theme song running through my head. It starts mid-afternoon every Sunday. Every Sunday, I say I’ll just watch it in the morning instead of staying up late-for-me to watch it, but the “dun, dun dundaduns” running through my head for 8 hours make it impossible to resist.
BTW, remind of me of the Westeros wedding custom. I know the guests jovially, if roughly, strip the bride and groom and put them in bed - do they actually stay there to see the couple, er, couple?
I think so. I think I remember Catelyn (of all people) talking about her wedding night, and the bedding was witnessed.
Weiss and Benioff are being nicer to Tyrion, and to Sansa. First, they let Tyrion keep his nose. Then at the wedding, Sansa kneels for him. In the book, he had to climb on the back of his fool to drape the cloak – she refused to bend.
I don’t like the actor cast as Daario. He’s got too much of a Fabio look. Blech. But I guess he fits. Shallow and conceited. I don’t remember much of that plot line though.
I *think *“the bedding” is just the process of stripping the couple down to their undies, then carrying them to the bedchamber, making bawdy jokes (and possibly copping a feel) along the way. I believe the crowd leaves after getting the newlyweds to their bed.
I actually like TV Daario. In the books he didn’t make much of an impression on me. At least the actor has good charisma and some chemistry with Emilia Clarke. Who, by the way, kicked ass in that scene. There’s a moment where she’s being all tough, but she just contains the beginning of a smile at something Daario says. It was really well done. (Though I understand if certain viewers were too distracted to notice!)
So, I’m thoroughly confused about Shae. It seemed like they were setting up her betrayal with venomous jealousy as the motivator, which could work. But the look she gave Tyrion upon seeing the clean sheets was positively pleasant. Not that she’s completely happy, but the way they’ve built her character, she’s going to need some heavy duty motivation to turn on him, and this doesn’t look like it.
TV Shae has diverged enough from book Shae that I very much doubt she’ll end up dying the same way. I expect that she won’t betray Tyrion like in the book, but perhaps be executed for her involvement with Sansa, which I think was what actually happened to Sansa’s handmaid in the book. This’ll give more motivation for Tyrion, too.
I never really understood Shae’s betrayal in the books. When she was first brought forward to testify against Tyrion, I thought she was being coerced; but how did they find her? Was she working for Tywin the whole time, to keep tabs on Tyrion and be used against him? Or did she just finally get fed up with having to hide in the shadows? Why was she in bed with Tywin - was he a hypocrite about the whores thing? That seemed out of character for him. Or was something else going on? Was she manipulating both of them?
I took it not so much of a betrayal but as she didn’t have much choice. Tyrion, her protector and best-bet-for-a-good-life, looks like he’s going to be in prison for a long time, or even executed. Tywin comes along wanting her. First off, she’s a whore, what is she going to say to Tywin if he says “get in my bed”? She doesn’t have a whole lot of choice in the matter.
Second off, with Tyrion imprisoned, she needs to find a new protector, or it’s off to a whorehouse or worse for her. Tywin is fine for that. Regardless of personal feelings, she’s savvy enough to know that she can’t make it on her own, so even if she was deeply, madly in love with Tyrion (which is doubtful IMO, but she might be fond of him), she’s still going to go with Tyrwin because she has no choice, and it’s not that bad of a situation.
As far as the rest of the latest episode… I do like Daario. I could never reconcile the blue beard and gold mustache and general painted-peacock visage that Martin paints of him with Dany thinking he’s so damn handsome. I have a much easier time believing that part of the story with his looks in the show.
That’s what I figured when I read it. However I was left wondering how they found Shae to make her testify against Tyrion (it seems unlikely, but possible, that Varys revealed her). And also, she seemed to enjoy humiliating Tyrion a little too much in her testimony, certainly beyond what was necessary if she was being coerced.
