Game of Thrones (season 5) BOOK SPOILERS!! TV SPOILERS!

Alright, it’s been a while since I read the books, so remind me: are the White Walkers and the Others the same?

After watching tonight’s episode [Hey! Spoilers] there’s the bad-ass wight commanders and the the zombie army cannon fodder of the dead they’ve vacuumed up.

What are the distinctions between: “Others”, “White Walkers”, and those zombies assaulting that harbor town as basically zombies?

Crasters kids are turned into Others/White Walkers. The people that are killed are turned into zombies.

They are the same. They changed the name because “Others” and “others” are indistinguishable when spoken, and audiences would constantly wonder “what others? The other rangers?”

Well, sure, it’s technically never been established in the books, but there’s been enough hints and inferences (such as the conversation about whether Valyrian steel and dragonsteel are the same thing) that it was pretty unsurprising. In fact I think it’d have been more surprising if it hadn’t been able to do anything special to the Others/White Walkers.

We know of three blades on the show (Jon has Longclaw, Brienne has Oathkeeper, Joffrey’s blade is likely with Tommen now). If they introduce Randall Tarly, he has another one (Heartsbane), and according to the ASOIAF wiki in the books there’s three more swords in known possession, plus assorted other weapons here and there.

On another note… I have a lot of qualms with the way the show handles thing, but man, the battle here at Hardhome really shows how slow and boring some of the other storylines from Books 4 and 5 are, such as Arya’s training.

Yeah. Shit happened. :eek::smiley:

Some people actually didn’t make stupid decisions.:rolleyes:

That last scene was beyond anything I was expecting for this episode. At every point in the episode when it was teased that the White Walkers would attack my brain keep saying it would not happen because it did not happen in the books yet.

After reading the last book, I believe my brain was conditioned to think that I would have to wait until the next season/book for awesome things to happen while I patiently endure Tyrion on a boat or Dani struggling with her diarrhea.

But then the show delivered everything I thought I would have to wait for. The huge army of undead attacking the living. A white walker in battle slicing through one of the Thenns and gliding around the battlegrounds. Jon Snow fighting said white walker and cutting him down with Valyrian steel. And finally the leader of the white walkers raising the dead.

I felt a genuine chill when winds and snow started to pick up at Hardhome. Plus, I now feel more confident that the showrunners can handle the show without the books being written.

Well there were hints, true, but kind of vague and whatnot so that I was surprised when Valyrian Steel was able to do what it did.

The guy at the end was the Nightsking. Who was the guy Jon killed? Another former Lord Commander?

And I guess the Battle of Hardhome does spoil the books somewhat - though in the books Jon is getting stabbed, while he sends Tormund to go up to Hardhome by land. Also, if that means Tormund is going to be a POV character that’s going to be awesome.

Doubt it, I think a former Lord Commander turned Walker should be unique and special. Guessing the one he killed was just a fairly old, powerful one.

The scene where the unnamed Wildling spearwife lets herself be overrun by child-wights was intense. I wonder if she knew those particular kids in life?

He was dressed as a Nightswatch member though? The unsullied are not sure.

I don’t think any of the White Walkers or the Night’s King have been wearing Night’s Watch uniforms.

Wouldn’t this guy be the son of the Night’s King anyway? Unless just fucking an Other gives you horns.

“Lots of people name their swords.” - Arya
“Lots of cunts.” - The Hound

Tell me about it. I got chills - and that hardly ever happens to me. Brrrr.

What is your alls favorite theme or soundtrack motif? Besides the brilliant Rains of Castamere, mine is called “Thenns” on the season 4 soundtrack, but it’s basically “Big battle with Crows involved”. Heard last season in the Castle Black battle and last night some. We also got a callback to the very first scene in the series musically.

Unrelated, I’m wondering if “The Letter” is actually going to be sent by Sansa and not Ramsey.

Well, depends on if the letter is true or not. I’m on the side that it’s not true.

Doubt it’s completely true since he asks for Reek back, but Theon is with Stannis.

One interesting note, it’s now pretty much impossible to have "book spoilers’ since the show has passed the books and/or gone off the rails. Sure the books still can be used for background info, but as for what happens next they are only slightly better than tea leaves.

I mean Jon will receive a letter from Sansa telling him Bran and Rickon are alive.

After this season, but there’s still plenty to go in this season for spoilers. And interestingly mention of Lady Stoneheart could be a spoiler because it could happen (the Freys seem to have gotten off Scot Freys if you will).

Not really. I mean you could try, but it’s entirely possible the show writers will have changed it. Even in A Feast for Crows, she really doesnt do anything critical to the plot line. Dont get me wrong, I loved the character, but some cuts had to be made.
