Game of Thrones, The Kingsroad, 4/24/11

Well, I’m still hanging in there and actually enjoying watching the show. My main problem is with the timeline that seems to jump all over the place. It confused me because first it showed Ned going with Robert, then Cat decides she has to go tell Ned something, but then all of a sudden, Ned is back at Winterfell. Huh?!

Thanks for all the links and especially the discussion, it has helped a lot to try to understand. I don’t know if I’ll ever pick up the series and read the actual books, but at least I am thinking about it. In the mean time, I’ll enjoy the wild ride of the show during it’s run.

King’s Landing and the surrounding area is basically the royal desmesne. Whereas the entire Seven Kingdoms are the King’s (or whoever in power) through the subservience of the various sub-rulers of those lands, King’s Landing is the direct seat of the royal family and under the King’s personal control. It’s basically another of those practices arising from the series being based on medieval British history.

tarragon918 - Ned doesn’t go back to Winterfell after he leaves with Robert. What parts are you thinking of?

Is there any way for a person without HBO to see it? I’m not talking about anything illegal, but is there a pay per episode available?

Ned isn’t back at Winterfell – he’s still at King’s Landing at the end of the second episode.

There’s nothing much to differentiate the interiors, so it’s easy to get lost, in time and space. Same with the clothes, as mentioned upthread. No wardrobe changes from one day to the next, not in this universe (with the men, anyway).

I wish the sound were mixed better…it was easier to hear the skin-on-skin noises during Drogo and Dany’s first sex scene than the dialogue through most of the show.

And, oddly, despite that, I’ve had no problem following the show at all…

I’m kind of wondering if the Greyjoys are related to the Lannisters in some way, since Alfie Allen looks so much more like Peter Dinklage than any of the actors playing Tyrion’s relatives that I’m having a hard time crediting it as accidental casting…

No, he’s at the inn at the crossroads. The river that the fight takes place at is the Trident. I imagine they make it all the way to King’s Landing next episode.

**
Palo Verde**, nope. Not that I’m aware of.

Well…ONE thing I’m having a hard time with…

I can’t tell Sansa and Myrcella apart. The men and boys, no problem. Adult women, no issue whatever. Arya? Don’t mistake her for anyone.

But the two teenage girls… It was only watching this week’s episode a second time that I realized everyone at the breakfast table were actual Lannisters, and it wasn’t Sansa invited to join them as Joffrey’s betrothed. To be fair, that may be mostly due to the fact that Myrcella’s done nothing of substance so far but express a bit of concern for Bran.

The scene where Arya had to chase Nymeria away was longer and sadder in the book, but still poignant here. Lady’s death was heartbreaking. Did they make it obvious enough to non-book-viewers that the butcher’s boy had been killed, not just captured? It’s hard for me to tell since I know the story.

Overall I’m liking the show.

There is? At what point? I may have to rewatch that ;D

No. Sorry I didn’t make that clear. I was referencing the novels.

LOL Okay, see, I’m confused, I tell you! So did the children, save Bran of course, go with Ned and Robert? I was under the impression that the family was all back at Winterfell.

I’m with Opal, I may have to go back and see if I can catch that glimpse of “Little Khal”

And ftr, I understood that the butcher’s son had been killed. Too bad about Lady. :frowning:

Sansa and Arya went with Ned. Sansa because she’s engaged to Joffrey and Arya to try to make her more lady like.

and to finish the list…

Jon went to the Wall to join the Night’s Watch.

Robb had to stay behind so that there would still be a Stark at Winterfell - he’s also starting to (as demonstrated in this episode) starting to take up his heir-ly duties and begin to help with the running of the place.

Bran is napping.

Rickon is at Winterfell following Robb around - clinging to his leg, as he said.

And I don’t see how anyone could possibly mix up blonde Myrcella with redhead Sansa. Besides being the same gender and age there’s really no similarities between them.

But not because she’s after power. Just because being a queen and marrying a king is the dreamiest thing that could ever happen to a girl. Sigh.

Some people say she’s sympathetic, some people go with pathetic.

-Joe, pathetic

[Spoiler]No, in the book Cersei basically used something called “moon tea” to cause an abortion when she realized she was pregnant. The “had a son die” was for the sake of the show.

Or, come to think of it, was total BS she was feeding Cat since she hadn’t heard it before.

I think you’re flirting with being more spoilery than Sampiro was looking for.

Yeah, I think so too.

I like all the actors so far playing the kids, but I think something from the book needs to be stressed here…In the looks department, Jon and Arya are quite clearly Starks…Longer more rectangular faces, and brown flat colored hair. Arya mentions she looks much more like Jon then any other of her siblings, who all take after their mother, round or heart shaped faces (Great job picking the cast for Robb, Sansa, and Bran) and glossy red hair. You can clearly tell the actor playing rob has had red/auburn highlights added, so I don’t understand why they didn’t do this with Bran??

But just one question, have they even mention the name of the character who tell Robb “If it comes to war, I will stand with you” in the godswood?? I mean, I know his name, but has it been mentioned?

Oops. Dammit. I just re-read the book and I still can’t keep things straight. I should just stop trying to answer questions.

Bran sleeping looks like a very young John Cusack. Cute kid.

Don’t think so, which kind of makes that bit look less like House Greyjoy stands behind Robb and more like ’ one of Robb’s entourage like totally supports him’.

For those who don’t know, he was Theon, heir of House Greyjoy, which rules the Iron Islands. The Iron Islanders are kind of like the Vikings, but lees touchy-feely and even less mentally stable.

So, Theon being on your side, particularly during an open war, is actually pretty significant.
