Santo Domingo’s Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez would like to shut down the bars and restaurants that have turned the capital’s Colonial City into a nocturnal hotspot for fun-seekers. The cardinal is particularly displeased with Mankala and Abacus, two bars that lie directly in front of the La Altagracia church. The cardinal says these establishments have turned the colonial zone into a “whorehouse” and denigrate the city as a whole, as reported in the press. He said that he favors closing every business that needs to be closed and sending their owners home – and if the owners are foreigners, then they can return to their own countries, he said.

Well, I didn’t know that the church owned the city!

Cardinal Nicolas Lopez Rodriguez has taken a radical position in stating that anything untoward in the Colonial City must be shut down, “especially the homosexual whorehouses.”

And by ‘homosexual whorehouses’ he means **one **gay bar. And it is a high class bar at that.

I think it must be PMS, but I dislike that moron today more that I ever had… and that’s saying a lot. If you need an explanation of what kind of person I am talking about hear this:

In a country where children die for lack of medicine in public hospitals about 15 years ago the Balaguer government spent 8 million pesos (about 4 million of this year’s dollars) in a mansion for the Cardinal (kissing the church’s ass was a great pastime of his). When interviewed and asked if he didn’t think that money could be better spent elsewhere the cardinal said “I deserve it. That’s the least this country can do for me”.

I am so glad I am not a Catholic anymore! I prefer keeping better company.

Everything he does demonstrates how little he cares for the majority of Dominicans. A few years ago he chose the US embassy as his target, because USAID was funding :eek: family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. Both are sorely needed in a country with high HIV infection rates and escalating teenage pregnancy figures. The US ambassador’s reaction was impressive in its restraint:
