Garfunkel and Oates series on IFC

I liked it. I didn’t expect it to be a show show. Like where they played characters and had a story. I thought it would be little vignettes interspersed with songs.

If I heard them correctly on Entertainment Weekly Radio, originally there were three of them, and the act was called Garfunkel, Oates, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.

“Go, Sports, Go!”

I know so many people who would be pissed off at that song.

This is the only one I’ve seen so far. Only a few chuckles a couple times. A lot meh inbetween. In particular, the song just … died.

(My favorite of their songs is “The Loophole” song. I prefer the live version to the official video. Not going to link to it. Search for it, if you dare.)

I’m recording a couple more episodes but if they go the same way as this one, I’m bailing.

Kate is a borderline capable actress. Riki is much stronger.

I just saw the one where there’s a porn parody of their act and the two porn actresses and their songs end up becoming more successful than Garfunkel & Oates. Clip is not really safe for work.

Very, very funny and it features a cameo by THE John Oates as a porn shop clerk. Love it!

Okay, I just listened to “Pregnant Women Are Smug” and found it hilarious. Although the title indicates all pregnant women, they’re really only attacking a certain type of pregnant woman - a type I’m sure we’ve all encountered. Imagine they were singing about brides instead. The attacks would be on the obnoxious bride-zillas who give all women getting married a bad reputation.

I have to say that so far I much prefer the music video or live versions of the songs more than the versions shown on the show. The video for “Sports Go Sports” is much better than what they showed—just them working out.

I’m watching it, but I think they are about half as funny as they think they are. The songs are mostly pretty lame to me.

What really ruined it, however, was seeing Jeselnick “on the job”.

I have the series set on my DVR, so I’ve seen every episode so far. I think they’re pretty funny. My only gripe is, sometimes they talk or sing way too fast and I lose the joke. Rewinding doesn’t help either. Time for closed captioning.

I’ve watched the first three episodes. They’re amusing while I watch them but I couldn’t see myself enthusiastically recommending it or anything. More of a “Heh, ok, that was pretty good” sort of reaction.

Kate looked like an “anything” muppet in this week’s episode.

That was a very uncharitable thought I had, which I am ashamed about.

Did not know about this, I’m excited! Long time fans…

Watched my 2nd episode: Road Warriors.

Somewhat better than the one I had seen before: Speechless.

Interesting guest stars. There’s only so much you can expect from Andy Kindler. Toby Huss was great. I’m most familiar with him from dramas like Halt and Catch Fire and Carnivàle (Stumpy!). Gerry Bednob as the driver was good. But the failure to adequately use Kevin Pollak is inexcusable. The guy is just great.

“Grapevine” as the bouncer was new to me. Look forward to seeing him again. Those scenes were pretty much the highlight of the episode.

The song 29/31 (?) had the “interesting” feature of Riki screaming/singing. She did it well. Having said that, I don’t need to hear her do it again.

The alleyway scene didn’t fit with the rest of the episode.

I’ve seen three of the five episodes released so far, and really liked it. Fast-moving and funny. I’d heard of G&O before but hadn’t seen much of them.

I’ll definitely try to catch all eight episodes of this IFC season.
