Well, the station I reported as 2.79 yesterday was 2.99 today!
We took my husband’s car in for tires and brakes, and enroute, I saw a station in Md at 2.76 - so I stopped and topped off. I’m so ashamed. I feel like I’m contributing to the panic that’s going to cause a gas shortage. Lunacy!!
The local NPR station was talking about Flexible Fuel Vehicles and e85 gas yesterday. They said that many people are driving FFV’s and don’t know it, because auto companies haven’t made a big deal about them – mostly because there aren’t a lot of gas stations around that sell e85 gas.
For once, it seems that Iowa is being energy-progressive. They’re building wind farms all over the place, and the number of e85 gas stations is expected to double every year for the foreseeable future.
Gas here is $2.79, but that was two hours ago, so it might be higher now. I’m lucky to be working just part-time. My commute is two days a week, 15 miles one day and 30 miles the other.
Dover, NH, prices range from $2.99 to $3.20 depending on octane rating
heck, i drive an ‘02 Neon and even with driving “boringly” and getting around 37-40 MPG, i still want a more fuel-efficient vehicle, problem is, it’s getting late in the season for a small displacement motorcycle, and a newer car is not a financial option at this point, gonna’ have to “grin and bear it” and cut my driving to the bare necessities…
and as i love to drive, it’s gonna hurt more, first off, driving “boringly”, and no more driving just for fun…
maybe i should pick up one of those Giant Bicycles “Revive” recumbentswith electric pedal-assist, and a solar panel to recharge the battery, commute to work on that, it’s only 9 miles to work, but the roads are really hilly…
The BP on Hillsboro Street near NC State was completely out of regular ($3.18/gallon) after 4 PM; I got half a tank of silver for $3.28/gallon. The BP on Duraleigh Road had plenty of regular, at $3.30/gallon.
Hmm, after checking Giant’s website, the Revive is bloody overpriced, $2200, i could get a decent small scooter for around $2000 or less, and it’d be faster than the Revive, admittedly it would still require gasoline, but i figure a 50-125cc engine should get from 60-90 MPG depending on size (smaller motors get better mileage), and since i’d only use it on the back roads to commute between work and home, and would never hit the highway, top speed isn’t an issue, the road to work has a 35 MPH speed limit anyway…
so the next question is, go with a Yamaha 2-stroke 50cc model (equivalent power to a 100cc 4 stroker) or a 125cc 4 stroker
Oh, well, for towing that’s a whole different thing. Most of my objections tend toward “soccer moms” who buy an SUV & have 1 kid or something, with no plans to use the vehicle for any kind of reasonable practical use.
I heard the same rumors earlier, so I did a little checking online. So far I’ve found this article:
According to the article, 30 percent of the stations in the panhandle are out of gas. Is it possible to fill up a few gas cans and take them with you? I did that last year when I had to travel after Hurricane Frances. Not the perfect solution, but it got me where I needed to go.
I paid $2.95 a gallon for regular unleaded this afternoon in West Palm Beach. Other stations have topped the $3 mark. The lines at each pump were two and three cars deep, and there were several sheriff’s deputies monitoring the station (to prevent drive-offs, I’m guessing).
My new coworker told me today that he heard the price is going to increase to $5 a gallon tomorrow. Being the good Doper that I am, I asked for a cite. He said his wife told him, and he doesn’t know where she got the information. Sorry, not good enough. I’m not panicking yet.
I’m back! Ended up parking near the subway in the Bronx and getting my first parking ticket, not knowing it was street-cleaning day, so don’t tell me public transportation ain’t expensive.
Ahem. Gas. Yonkers, NY: $2.91/3.09/3.19 or $2.95/3.09/3.19.
NYC, da Bronx: $2.99/3.09/3.19.
Manhattan: If you have to ask, you can’t afford it. No, seriously, I didn’t walk by any of the 3 or 4 gas stations left there but I bet it’s 3.50 or something.
Any one else seeing really long lines? Everywhere I went today, all the gas stations were just packed - lines of cars extending out into the street.
Are we supposed to be panicking, or are people just trying to top off before it goes up yet again? There’s no talk of shortages, are there?
I’m showing my age, but it reminded me of the long lines during the Energy Crisis of the '70s.
I filled up yesterday, when I should have several days ago (the car was starting to whine about being hungry). I pulled up to a pump at a station advertising $2.89 a gallon.
The pump read 2.79. I wasn’t going to ask questions at all, but I did saunter over to check the price on another pump and it read $2.89. As did another pump I checked as I pulled away from the place. I got gas for 10 cents off because someone screwed up. Score!
According to gaspricewatch.com, gas is selling at $5.03 in Death Valley, but I think that should be marked as an exception. Hmph.
Power outages shut down a couple major pipelines, and storm damage has put several refineries out of commission, so there is some concern over gas supplies, if things don’t get rectified quickly. Last I read though, the two pipelines had restored some of their capacity, so hopefully it won’t ever reach crisis level.
Lake Charles, LA–At the station about a block away from my campus, I saw 2.69/2.79/2.89 a gallon. When I made my birthday call to my dad (my parents are about ninety miles north of here), he told me that in the town where Mom works, gas was 2.99 or 3.09. He didn’t remember what the tiny station in our hometown was charging.
I didn’t see any lines at the station near campus. I don’t have a car myself (and for once I’m glad about it), so I haven’t seen what it’s like at other stations around town.
According to Gas Buddy, Buffalo’s got the most expensive gasoline in the US right now. Much of the country is hovering at $3.49.9; Buffalo is at $3.89.9 to $4.01.9.
