On the phone with my mother in my native Mercer County, Pennsylvania, she reported a price of $2.89 a gallon—just 10¢ cheaper than the price Lsura reported in nearby Youngstown, Ohio. Of course, that was twelve hours ago, so I’m sure it’s shot up considerably since. My brother in Cleveland reports prices over $3.00 a gallon.
I haven’t owned a car for about two years, and I cringe to think of what the gas prices here in New York City are. They’ve always been a tad higher than New Jersey and Pennsylvania (though on par with Connecticut.) I’m not even sure where the nearest gas station is. Thank God for mass transit!
I topped off day before yesterday at $2.55 in South Houston; this morning the same station has $2.71 on the sign, but no gas.
By my apartment, the Shell station is $2.99. For the cheap stuff.
Tuesday night I filled up with regular unleaded for $2.75 a gallon. When I came home from work the same gas station had regular unleaded for $2.89. A fourteen cent increase overnight.
I’ll bet it’s over three dollars a gallon by tomorrow. The hubby and I have already discussed the fact that this weekend is probably the last hurrah with the boat and we won’t be driving anywhere that isn’t absolutely necessary.
Well, believe it or not, it was pretty muc h a lateral move. My previous car was a Corvette and I’m actually getting about the same gas mileage. (Or at least I will be. The truck is still in that break-in phase where you lose a couple miles/gallon.)
I looked around at all sorts of vehicles that might fit my needs and found that pretty much any truck that could tow what I need it to tow is going to be somewhat of a gas hog.
Last night, I tried to get the jump on price increases and failed dismally. There was a line at my local Hess station to buy regular at $3.199. I ended up filling up at $3.399 for 89. I drove around to some of the other gas stations and most of them were more expensive by $0.10/gallon or so.
I don’t remember gas lines like this since I was a tot in the 70s.
Here in suburban NJ, it was in the $2.55-2.75 range late last week. Of course, I don’t get paid until tomorrow and therefore can’t afford to get gas until the prices are completely unbearable. I have a girly-SUV that doesn’t cost much more to fill than the Chevy Cavalier I had before it, but I’m already changing my weekend plans because I know I have to drive out to Ohio for my cousin’s wedding next week.
I filled up on Monday with the cheap stuff cause it was 2.59. Went by the same station this morning and it’s at 2.89. I’m gonna check again on my way home and see if it’s gone up again.
There’s been a rumor flying around here about rationing. I even heard it from someone who’s husband works for the local guvment. Wouldn’t surprise me.
I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado but I’m starting to think a Vespa would be cool.
Forgot to mention I could get only $50 worth of gas, which got me to 3/4 full. The pay-at-the-pump service at Hess was dispensing only $50/transaction.
The gas station was a total zoo, so I didn’t go inside to ask the attendant why gas was apparently being rationed. Anyone else running into limits on the amount of gas they can buy?
Yesterday morning I went to the grocery and passed Thornton’s , gas was $2.49/gallon . By the 10 PM news last night , it was up to $3.49/gallon. If that isn’t price gouging I don’t know what is.
That’s normal; I worked at a gas station for a couple of months. Most of the time when you buy gas with a credit card, it authorizes $50. I think American Express gets you $75. This used to be more than enough to fill up about any car or truck. They may need to change these limits. You could have just swiped it again and kept going.
I filled up last night for $2.79 and it was still that price when I headed to work this morning. However, as of 9:45 AM (CST) it had jumped to $2.99 for regular. I am supposing by lunch it will be over $3.00.
I live in Leeds, Alabama, and work in Trussville. It’s exactly eleven miles to work, but the prices are about ten-twelve cents apart in difference. The higher prices are always in Trussville. I can pretty much bet it will be over $3 a gallon here before Leeds follows suit this evening.
Last night around 10 PM, the east side of Metro Detroit had a low of 3.09 (a Sunoco, blech), but the vast majority of ones I drove past were at 3.15 or 3.19 for regular.
I wouldn’t mind this at all, honestly, if I had a job. I graduated in May and still haven’t found employment.
Yep, definitely normal. The limits set will depend on the station, the system, and the credit card. In my experience you generally get about $100 authorized in the Chevron system (this was several years ago and they changed the POS so that I can no longer easily see the preset amount.) The debit amount is generally set much lower.
Because the money doesn’t come out until the transaction is completed. The system does not query your account balance and set the amount based to that. If you have 15 dollars available but pump 20 dollars the amount will be rejected due to NSF and then the owner gets to have fun trying to get paid for the gas pumped. I’m not sure how that is handled.
I’ve bought with a credit card at this gas station before and have gone well into the $70 range. Very strange stuff. In fact, I remember filling up my 'vette from bone-dry ($45 or so) and then filling up three 5-gallon containers of premium for my quad (another $40 or so) on the same transaction not two months ago.
I paid with a debit card and I checked my balance this morning and had more than enough at the time to keep going.
Maybe somebody’s screwing with the authorization limits or something.
In that case, I don’t know what’s up with your station. And I didn’t realized the limits change at different stations, I was told it was the credit card companies that set the limits, but whatever. I haaaaated that job, btw, have some sympathy for the people who work at those places.
I TOLD my SO he might want to go ahead and fill up last night, but he didn’t. He’s not going to be a happy camper when he does.
Yes, we’ve been spoiled for years, but this is annoying.
