Do you own any? My first purchase was My Own Private Idaho. It’s the only one I have space for in my apartment presently. I have several others like the Trois CouleursTrilogy, unframed, sitting in storage at a friend’s place.
I don’t go for rarities and my purchases needn’t be original prints if I can’t afford them. But I’m a sucker for good design and typography. And of course, I buy posters of movies I love.
Even if you’re not a collector, tell me about a movie poster you’ve seen and like.
The poster to “Escape From New York” was given to me by the owner of the Family Theatre in Hazard, KY back in 1981. He had already trash-canned it, I asked for it, he said sure. Nice cheesy poster with a scene that never happened in the movie (Statue of Liberty lying on a street).
I bought a poster from the cheesy, but great 1968 SF movie “Project X” (not to be confused with the cheesy, but bad Mathew Broderick flick from the 80s) for 10 bucks off e-bay.
I’ve had a number of posters but never really liked them and they’re now in the basement (ones for Twister, and Andre–the one about that seal). The ones in my room are ones for Man on the Moon and Babe. And, it’s not really a movie poster but I have a huge one of Hannibal Lecter hanging up so that it’s the first thing you see when walking into my room.
I have worked in the theatre industry for most of my adult life. Right now I have about 50 or so. I did get rid of a bunch though as at one point I had a couple of hundred. (at that time I owned a movie theatre so I had easy access to them)
So of my highlights…
Beauty and the Beast framed hanging in living room
The Star Wars Trilogy reissue framed hanging in bed room
Most of the Disney Classics up through B&tB
The Indy Jones posters
Dances with Wolves
After a while I stopped seeing the value of them when I was up to my ass in them But I still enjoy taking them all out of their tube and looking at them.
Oh and one of my favorite poster strictly from a design point of view is The Rocketeer, which I have as well.
