No, this is more pointless: “Gaudeamus Igitur”, “Let us therefore rejoice”, is, of course, a German student song featured in Brahms’s “Academic Festival Overture” which he wrote as a thank-you for an honorary doctorate conferred on him by Breslau University. As I originally heard the story, he forgot to say thank you in the first place and so wrote this splendied overture by way of apology. It went down a storm and in consequence I, for one, have known what “Gaudeamus” meant since I studied the A.F.O. for music O-level back in the 1970s.
Churchill was no great lover of modern “classical” Latin pronunciation. He found it hard to picture Caesar saying “Wainy weedy weeky”.
And I’m not getting into any limerick competitions with EddyTeddyFreddy or Hamadryad
While Ilsa_Lund uses Japan
For his prose which, with no rhyme, still scans* EDT and I
Use a verse-form that’s wry;
But we’re doing the best that we can!
EFT and I rhyme, one supposes
But we both come up smelling like roses.
We’ll both have high places
In Gaudere’s graces
And powder the brown on our noses.
Hamadryad praises Gaudere
With flowery verse of that town in the land of green
'Tis that prose that holds to us and ours near
The memory of the rhyme, as many have seen
For 'tis not the skill in the words so sweet
That tells of of their devotion
Lest for those who shan’t find it neat
Shall raise the quietest of commotions
As the sun rises eternal on an administrator’s hat
So too shall their thankless duty continue
Though we know in our hearts one shall go to bat
For she hath construction of sinew
Gaudere rules always fair
One of the few, an SDMB mare
I don’t need any fucking Iambic Pentameter in MY sonnets!
I signed on to this message board
To help out the ignorant hoard
And then came Gaudere
Who said, “I shouldn’t say
But your postings have left me quite bored.”
Ilsa Lund seems to like foriegn flicks
And the name would remind you of chicks
But you would feel like a wussie
If you went for some pussy
And then realised that girls don’t have dicks
Sorry
I suppose I shouldn’t mention that I’ve known the meaning of Gaudeamus since grade school? I’d go into the story of it, but I’m afraid of getting in the way of these poetic fools:D
Wow, so many poems! Thanks, Hamadryad, EddyTeddyFreddy, Ilsa_Lund, MaxTheVool and NoClueBoy. I got a kick out of them.
Mike, if you’re going to taunt the dopers you might not get to see my vacation pix anymore. At least not the ones where I go anyplace above 30 degrees Farenheit.
Gaudere recently explained something to me in a way that made sense and sent my blood pressure back to normal levels. It pleased me that she took the time.
And thanks, Libertarian, for the OP.
For a woman, she’s really doing well. (Work with him, Gaudere!)
