Police in Charlotte NC recently issued a warning to residents that a radical “Christian” group was planning on converging on the town to protest outside a gay church, abortion clinics, mosques and possibly other targets. The leader of this group had previously been to Charlotte and screamed his lungs out during a mass commitment ceremony. He was also arrested recently for trespassing at a Charlotte clinic.
I believe I’ve posted to this board previously about how little use I have for Christianity or any other religion, but I truly wanted to commend the people of the Charlotte MCC for showing exactly what the Christian spirit is and ought to be. Open arm in the face of hostility. Love in the bared teeth of hatred. Classy and truly Christ-like.
It’s in the Pit because of the title I wanted to use. I understand that not all straight Christians are like these nutjobs. Flame if you must.

I’m sorry… what did you say?
Seriously, I agree with you wholeheartedly. They couldn’t have had a classier response and hopefully it shamed the protesters into taking a closer look at their actions and motivations. Bravo Charlotte MCC.
I have a videotape of a newsbroadcast from Kansas City, in the early 90’s. Fred Phelps and crew were picketing a church there, apparentlly a main-stream Christian denomination congregation.
A young girl, looked to be in her middle teens, approaches the picket line from the church. She’s carrying a platter and offers one of the picketers a doughnut. He asks, in an ugly tone “Are those the ones infected with the AIDS virus?” Her reply? “I don’t think so.”
On behalf of the rest of the straight Christians on this board, I want to offer my sincere regrets, and completely distance myself from, this effort to reduce gay people to their sexuality and a few stereotypes.
I’d also like to add that now all ‘gay christians’ are like that. So take a few instances and apply them to the whole whether gay or not is wrong. The examples I can give are from experiences I’ve had, but since it then becomes a gay vs non-gay, I choose not to share them. So in this case, were the people being Christlike? Absolutely. If I’m on the way to rob a bank, and I help someone who’s fallen, am I being Christlike? Sure, but does it imply that my life is a reflection of Christs? I think not.
